Specification of Letters Patent No. 12,930, dated May 22, 1855.
'To all whom it may concern:
lowing is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification.
The said drawing represents a perspective view of said machine.
T, represents the frame work which holds the machinery; H the weight; I the rope or chain; Gr the pulley over which the rope or chain passes; K the main cog wheel or gear, which meshes into the small pinion N which drives the crank V to which is attached the pitman P that is attached to the gate A at the letter U.
0 is the crank that is used in winding up the weight H.
M is a ragwheel into which the catch L plays, to hold the weight, so that in winding up the weight will not run down when you stop turning also to enable a person to wind up the weight without detaching the pitman P.
The gate A is represented in the said drawing as about half open, the crank V, is of sufficient sweep and is attached to the gate A at a point so that each revolution of the crank opens and shuts the gate being propelled by the weight, H, which is wound up by the rope or chain I and wound upon the shaft of the main wheel K. The pulley G is used in order to obtain the greater fall of the weight.

D represents the spring latch that springs into the catches that hold the gate both open and closed; The horizontal wire E connects with the spring catch and the right angular iron or elbow, which is attached and turns at the point F and from thence connected with a like right angular elbow F with the extended lever to which is attached the wire or cord which is taken hold of to operate the spring catch D from its respective catches, so that a downward pull on the cords or wires Q will detach the gate at both the posts B and R respectively, which enables a person by the aforesaid means to start the catches and then the weight immediately acts upon the crank and throws the gate either open or shut at the will of the operator.
The benefit and advantage of this apparatus are very apparent. The weight can be made sufficiently heavy to open and close the gate however, heavy, promptly and by an increase of weight and by gearing up, you can gain any, amount of retentive power you may desire, which permits a person to do at his leisure what cannot be successfully done, when in a carriage or on horseback.
The apparatus in actual practice has been found so successful, that it is not necessary to. stop your horse while opening or shutting the gate, and a lady on horesback has but to merely touch, the wire to cause the gate to fly open. There is no danger of being caught with the gate because it is fastened back as well as closed. It gives in all winds and all weather.
What I claim is my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The opening and shutting of gates or doors, by the means before described that is means of a retentive, or reserve power so that a gate or door may be opened or closed a succession of times as let it be obtainedv by winding up a spring or weight or Ivhether gear is used, or, on cords and puleys.
