JOHN F. SHERLOCK, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF 'I'O CI-IARLES I1. OREILLY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
TICKET-HOLDER, PAY-ENVELOP, AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 28, 1919.
Application filed February 5, 1917. Serial No. 146,739.
velop, or an envelop adapted to accompany goods and to contain the bill, as when goods are sent to a customer 0. O. D.
The prime object of the invention is to provide an envelop which can be manufactured ata minimum cost and of such construction that while being in every way as efficient as the device of this character now in use, it can be also utilized to carry printed advertisements, coupons, and other data of interest to the employee receiving a pay envelop, or the purchaser to whom goods have been sold.
' The device may also be'conveniently used as a ticket holder for theater, transportation or' other tickets or coupons.
- Other objects and aims of the invention, more or less specific than those referred to above, will be in part obvious and in part pointed out in the course of the following description of the elements, combinations, arrangements of parts and applications of principles, constituting the invention; and the scope of protection contemplated will be indicated in-the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing which forms apart of this specification:
Figure 1 is a diagrammatic view from which the holder or envelop is formed.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken through the device when the blank has been folded to the commercialform.
Fig. 3 is aview in elevation, of'the completed device. a 1 Fig. 4 is a diagrammatic view of a slightly different embodiment of theinvention.
Fig. 5 is ,averticalsectional view of the embodiment shown in Fig.4, when the blank has been folded to the commercial form.
Fig. 6 is an elevational view of the embodiment of my invention disclosed in Fig. 4.
Similar reference characters refer to simipart 2 along the line 10, which is preferably weakened for a purpose which will be hereinafter pointed out. The part 4 is cutaway as at 11.
In forming the envelop from the blank A, the flaps 7 and 8 of the part 5 are folded over upon the part 5 and then the part 5 is folded over upon-the part 4 upon the line 12. The flaps 7 and 8 are then pasted along the edges 13 and 14 ofthe part 4, so that an envelop is formed bythe parts 4 and 5, having three sidesclosed and the edges of this envelop which are formed by pasting the flaps 7 and 8 to the'part 4, are strengthened by the double thickness of material at these points. It will be noted that it is the rear surface of the flaps 7 and 8 that are pasted to the edges 13 and 14 respectively of the part 4.
When this operation has been accomplished, it will be noted that the flaps 6 can be doubled over the outer end of the part 4 so as to provide a closing member for said envelop. The flap 6, if desired, may be gummed. as at 15, so that the envelop can be completely closed, which is desirable, of course, when the device is used as a pay envelop. The cutaway portion 11 of the part 4 facilitates the insertion of money. or any other object, into the envelop.
The parts 1 and 3 of the blank are then a 'When this has been done, the next opera- I tion is to fold the device along the lines 14 and 17, which completes the operation of forming the holder, leaving the flap 9 to be folded over the device, as shown inFig. 3.
The embodiment of my invention shown in Fig. 4. is of precisely the same construction as that shown in Fig. 1, except that the cutaway portion 18 is of a different shape than that as shown at 11 in Fig. 1, and the flap corresponding to the flap 6 has been omitted. The device when folded takes the appearance of Fig. 6. It will be noted that this embodiment of the invention is particularly adapted for l10lding tickets, inasmuch as the cutaway portion 18 enlarges theopening. of
the envelop. If desired, a flap such as 6 shown in the embodiment of Fig. 1, may be provided to close the open end of this envelop.
The flap 9, which is preferably joined to the part 2 by a weakened line, may be utilized as a receipt coupon, as when the device is employed as a container for a bill, that is, when the goods are delivered the recipient can sign the receipt, provided: upon this flap, and the carrier can return this to the person from whom the goods were purchased.
Both sides of the parts 1, 2 and 3 may be utilized for the purposes of carrying advertising matter, and the rear surface of the parts 4 and 5 can be similarly used. Thus when the envelop is used as a pay envelop,
' the employer may print upon any one of these spaces various instructions .to his employees, orthe name of a savings bank may be printed thereon, calling the attention of the employee to an institution where his savings may be deposited. 7
When the device is used by concerns selling merchandise various advertisements may be printed upon the blank spaces provided upon the device, thereby bringing the purchaser into intimate contact with the advertisement to which it is desired to direct his attention.
VV'hil'e I have described the part 5 as having its edges secured to the part i when they 1 lie in superimposed relation to form the envelop, it is obvious that for some purposes it will not be necessary to so fasten them together, because when the device is in such a position a complete pocket is formed with out any fastening means whatever being provided between aforesaid parts.
Having thusdescribed my invention what I cljaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: I
1 A device of the class described, compri'singa blank having a part adapted to be folded over on another part of said blank and to be pasted thereto on two of its marginal edges to form a pocket having three sides closed, said part that is folded over being provided with a flap and the part which the first named part is folded upon having a cutaway portion, said blank having other parts of" dimensions equal to that of the parts providing the envelop adapted to fold upon themselves and one of said parts being provided with a closing flap.
2. A device of the class described, comprising a blank formed of four rectangular parts and having a fifth rectangular part joined to one of said parts, said last named part being adapted to be folded over upon one of said last named parts and pasted thereto along two of its marginal edges to form an envelop having threesides closed, and said last named part being provided with a closing flap for said envelop, the other rectangular parts of said blank being so folded upon themselves as to reduce the size of the blank to that of the envelop.
3. A device of the class described, comprising a blank formed of four rectangular parts, one of said parts having a cutaway portion, a fifth rectangular part joined to said last mentioned parts and having a flap, said last two mentioned parts. being folded upon each other and joined together along their edges tov form an envelop having three sides closed, the remaining parts being folded upon. themselves. and upon said envelop portion.
4. A device of the class described, comprising a blank formed of four rectangular parts, oneof said parts having a cutaway portion, a fifth rectangular part joined to said last mentioned part and having. afl'a-p, said last two parts being folded upon each other and joined together so as to formi an envelop having three sides closed, the remaining rectangular parts being folded upon themselves and upon said envelop, and one of said remaining parts being provided with a flap joined to it by a weakened line.
5. A device of the class described, comprising a blank formed of four rectangular parts, and having a fifth laterally disposed rectangular part joined to one of said first mentioned parts, said laterally disposed part being adapted to be folded over the part to which it is attached and cemented thereto along two of its marginal edges to form an envelop having: three sides closed, said laterally disposed part being z irovided with a flja-p and the part to which-it is attached being provided with a cutaway portion, and the remaining rectangular portions being adapt ed to be folded upon themselves and superimposed upon said envelop portion and one of said remaining parts being provided with a flap which is adapted toextend partially about said envelop portion.
