Description
6. L. McCAlN.
COOLING FAN.
APPLICATION FILED FEB. 18. 1916.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE L. MoCAIN, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO PACKARD MOTOR CAR COMPANY, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION OF MICHIGAN.
COOLING-FAN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 28, 1919.
Application filed February 18, 1916. Serial No. 79,201.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE L. MCCAIN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Detroit, Wayne county, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cooling-Fans, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to motor vehicles, and particularly to the fan thereof, usually arranged at the rear of the radiator for assisting the circulation of air therethrough.
One of the objects of the invention is to s mplify and reduce the cost of the construction of such fans.
This and other objects and the novel features of the invention will appear from the fOllOWlIlg description taken in connection with the drawings which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure l is a front elevation of a fan embodying this invention Fig. 2 is a fragmentary edge view of the fan shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a plan view of one of the sections of the fan before it is bent into shape; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the complete sections of the fan.
Referring to the drawings, 10 represents a fan hub having a series of blade attaching lugs 11, extending radially from the hub. Fan blades 12 are secured to these lugs 11, and a rim 13 is formed around the periphery of the blades.
The fan blades and rim are preferably formed of stamped sheet metal, and the fan is made up of sections like that shown in Fig. 4, each of which sections comprises a blade ortion 14 and a part 15 extending from the end thereof and bent to form a portion of the rim 13. The free end of the part 15 has a flange 16 by which it is attached to the next adjacent blade 14 as shown in Fig. 1. The attachment may be by belts or rivets or the parts may be spotwelded to ether.
Fig. 3 s ows one of the fan sections as it comes from the stamping press and before it has been bent into the form shown in Fig. 4. It will be seen that the part 15 extends from the outer end of the blade portion 14 at an angle to the blade ortion and a reinforcing rib 17 is stamped 1nto the part 15 and extends longitudlnally thereof to give strength to the rim. It will be understood that the stamping shown in Fig. 3 is bent on the dotted lines 18 and 19, and the part 15 is slightly curved so that the com lete section shown in Fig. 4 is formed. For the fan shown in Fig. 1, six of these sections will of gourse be equired to makeup the complete It will be understood that other forms and various modifications and changes may be made without departing from the spir1t or sccipe of this invention.
aving thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Pat- I ent is 1. A sheet metal fan comprising a hub; a plurality of stampings; each stamping comprising a blade and a segmental rim section of a length to extend between the tips of a pair of adjacent blades, the blade extending substantially at right angles to the rim section at one end thereof, the juncture being oblique to the length of said section, theopposite end havin a blade enga 'ng flange, means to secure t e inner ends 0 the blades to the hub; and means to secure the flanges of eachsegment to the tip of the adjacent blades.
2. A sheet metal fan including a hub; a plurality of stampings; each stamping comprising a blade and a segmental run sectlon of a length to extend between the tips of a pair of adjacent blades means to secure the inner ends of the Ma es to the hub; and means to secure the free ends of the r1m sections to the outer ends of the blades.
3. A fan impeller of the screw type comprising a hub; a plurality of like sections,
each section consisting of a blade and a segment of the rim integral therewith; means to secure the inner ends of the blades to the hub; and means to fasten the rim segments together end to end.
4. As an article of manufacture, a sheet metal stamping to form a blade and a section of the rim of a fan impeller of the screw t pe comprising a rhomboidal rim section, a lade extending from one of the short sides of said section in a direction inclined to the length of said section, and a flange portion at the op osite short side.
In testimony w ereof I afiix my s1 ature.
GEORGE L. Mo AIN.
