Description

I .UNITEDA sTATEs PATENT orrion.
l PHILIP JOFFE, F NEW YORK, N. Y.
TOY PROPELLER-TOP.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, PHILIP J orrn, of New York, vin the county of New York, and in the State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Toy Propeller-Tops, and do hereby declare that the ollowing is a full, clear, and exact descrip'- tion thereof.
My invention relates to able se f-elevating propeller adapted to be released from the splnning top when the top lution as obtained from the spinning top before it becomes detached therefrom.
Other and furtherobjects of my invention will be apparent from the followin description of one embodiment thereo and from the accompanying drawin s in which Figure l is a sectlonal view o a spinning top with a view in side elevation of a detachable self-elevating propeller in place thereon with its upward flight indicated inl dotted lines; and e Fig. 2 a section taken on the l1ne-2-.2 of
Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrows.
In the embodiment of my invention chosen for purposes .of illustration, reference numeral l indicates a spinning top ofA any desired material and construction such as the ordinary well known wooden top. An open'- ing 2 is provided at the bottom thereof for the peg 3. The opening and the portion of the vpe tting therein maybe of any desired s ape, the drawing showing a square opening w1th a peg havmg a corresponding square portion to fit therein. The fit of the peg inf'its opening preferably is sufficiently tight to prevent the peg dropping therefrom but not too tight to prevent its longitudmal movement for a purpose to be hereinafter described. p
The top of the spinning top is rovlded with 'a recess 4 in which is adapte to fit a stem`5 of aI self-elevating propeller 6. The propeller may be of any suitable construction, of any desired material, and with any desired number of blades. A two bladed propeller is illustrated made of sheet metal in well known manner. The blades may be of diiferent colors to add attractiveness to the toy. The stem 5 of the propeller is adapted to lit opening 4 in the top suiiiciently tight"'to impart the spinning movea toypropellertop 'and has for its object to combine a spinfning to of any desired tvpe with a detach- Specication of Letters latent. Patented Jan, 28, 1919. kApplication led October 9, 1918. f Serial No. 257,430.
- manner hereinafter'described.
. To detach the propeller from the top when the to str1kes the ground so asto Venable the prope ler to fly up-ward from the effect of lts own revolution, the upward movement of thel -pe when the top strikes the ground is utlhze In the embodiment chosen for purposes of illustration a h ole 7 is provided in the top connecting recesses 4 and 5 in which 1s fitted a rod 8 secured to or integral with peg 3 and preferably having a head 9 secured thereon to prevent the rod and peg from belng removed entirely from the top. It 1s obvious that the rod 8 may be entirely Adisconnected from peg .3 if desired or even extend entirely therethrough and itself hit the dground, in which case thehead 9 may be use or not as desired.
In operation the stem 5 of the self-elevating propeller is. inserted in its recess 4 which causes peg 3 to protrude from the bottom of the top. The top, being wound with a string in ordinary manner, is thrown on the ground to cause it t0 spin. This spinning movement is imparted to the ropeller and as the top strikes the ground t e peg is forced into the top, thereby releasing the propeller which flies into the air at various heights according to the skill of the spinner. If desired, an
'explosive cap may beI placed between head 9 and stem 5, thereby causing the propeller to fly ofl with an explosive noise and somewhat accelerated by reason of any slight gas enerated.
any modifications of my invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art without departing therefrom or from the scope of the claims, my invention not being limited lto the particular embodiment chosen for movement when the top strikes opening therein adapted to receive a peg secure said propeller detaohably to said top, having longitudinal movement in said openand means to release said propeller from ing, and means to cause the upward' movesaid spinning top When the top strikes the 10 ment of said peg when it strikes the ground ground. 5 to release said propeller. In testimony that I claim the foregoing I 2. In a, toy, the combination of an elevathave hereunto set my hand. ing propeller with a4 spinning top, means to PHILIP JOFFE.
