MARIE I-I. JACK, OF HUNTINGTON, WEST VIRGINIA.
\ DOLL.
Application filed December 29, 1917.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MARIE H. JACK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Huntington, in the county of Gabell and State of est Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Dolls, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention pertains to dolls, and moreparticularly to dolls of the soft, stuffed type such as are adapted to be handled by a child and thrown about without liability of injuring the child.
The invention has for its object to provide a doll, the covering of which may be readily and cheaply made of portions of a discarded sock and stocking; and it consists in the peculiar and advantageous construction of the doll, and in the method of producing the same as hereinafter described and definitely claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, which are hereby made a part hereof:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a doll constructed in accordance with my inven tion.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal central section of the doll showing the covering and the stuffing which latter is preferably, though not necessarily, of raw cotton.
Fig. 4 which is diagrammatic in character comprises disconnected views of sections that enter into the covering of the doll, and. is illustrative of the mode of producing the said covering and its sections.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings.
The stuffing 1 of my novel doll is, as be fore indicated, preferably formed of raw cotton; and it is contained in a soft covering made up of a section that comprises a. body 2 and legs 3, a head section 41, a cap section 5, arm sections 6, and a neck-wrapping 7 of silk cord or thread or other material suitable to the purpose.
In practising my method and producing the section 23 the foot portion of a sock is cut off, and the legs 3 and body 2 are formed by splitting the tubular portion of the sock along its longitudinal center from its lower end to a point about one inch below the top portion 2 of the sock which is generally ornamented by colored stripes or other ornamental work. The said tubular portion of the sock is then turned inside Specification of Letters Patent.

out, and the legs 3 are stitched adjacent to their inner or cut edges by longitudinal through and through stitches to close the legs at the inner sides thereof, as indicated by S in Fig. 3, and said legs are also stitched transversely adjacent to their lower ends to close said ends, as indicated by 9 in Fig. 3, after which the section is turned back to place its normal outer side outermost, when as will be readily appreciated the section 23 shown in Fig. 3 will be produced; the said section having white legs 3 or legs of solid color, and a body portion 2 that is colored in whole or part and hence is ornamental and attractive in appearance. \Vhen deemed expedient or desirable the lower portions of the legs 3 may be ornamented by transverse fancy stitches 10 of contrasting-color silk, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
To form the head 41, a four-inch tubular section of a white lisle hose is sewed to the body portion 2 of section 23 by hand, as indicated by 11 in Fig. 3 while both sections are turned inside out, after which the sections 23 and 1 are stuffed, and the section 4; is drawn closed at the top, as indicated by 12 in Fig. 3.
The toe of the sock is employed for the cap section 5; the raw edge being turned under and basted to the head section 4, as indicated by 13 in Figs. 1-3, feather stitching of colored silk being preferably employed as shown in said figures for ornamental purposes. A tassel 14, preferably of colored silk, is by preference attached to the apex of the cap section 5.
The arm sections 6 are formed from the remaining part of the sock near the heel thereof; the said sections being sewed and stuffed, and then sewed to the body section 23 at points about one inch below the neck.
After the operations described or before the attachment of the cap section 5 and the arm sections 6, if desired, the neck and shoulders are shaped by drawing tightly around the neck about a half yard of colored silk or other wrapping 7; the ends of the said wrapping being securely tied and provided, by preference, with tassels 15, Figs. 1 and 2.
The face of the doll, in the preferred embodiment of the invention is painted with black water-color and dry rouge.
It will be gathered from the foregoing in the rag bag;
that my novel doll is susceptible of being easily and cheaply formed of material that otherwise Would be discarded or deposited also, that the doll is calculated to attract the attention of a child and no matter how roughly the doll is handled there is no liability of its injuring a child in any respect.
The cap section 5, is not necessary to the complete doll, but is formed of the toe of the sock when the condition of same so warrants, and the device upon which it is desired to claim Letters Patent, is the utilization of a Worn out sock to form a doll of the character set forth.
Having described my invention, What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s:
The method herein described of making a soft stuffed doll from discarded hose, Which consists in cutting off the foot portion, then forming a body and leg portion by splitting the tubular portion upwardly in its longitudinal center from its lower end to a point spaced from the top portion of the hose, then securing the cut edges of each leg formed by said splitting into closed position by a line of longitudinal stitches at the inner sides thereof, and closing the bottom of each leg by a line of transverse stitching, then forming a head portion by cutting a tubular portion from the hose and sewing same to the upper end of the body portion, then stufling said connected portions and stitching together the upper end of the said head portion, then securing a colored Wrapping about the neck portion so as to shape the shoulders and neck, then forming the arms from near the heel portion of the sock and stufling the arm sections and securing them to the opposite sides of the body portion, then forming a cap from the toe portion of the hose, and finally securing the cap to the head portion by an ornamental line of stitching entirely encircling the head,
substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
MARIE I-I. JACK.
