Like letters indicate like parts in each fig- The nature of this invention relates to the construction of washing-machines, and is more particularly designed as an improvement upon the washing-machine for which Letters Patent of the United States were issued to me on the 2d day of May, 1871, and numbered 114,380. The invention consists in the peculiar construction of vertically-adjustable journal-boxes with the shaft of the cylinder, as is more fully hereinafter set forth.

In the drawing, A represents my wash-box, mounted upon legs B. G is a frame, fitting snugly into the box A. Along the lower inner faces of the sides of this frame I secure metallic strips, in which are journaled the shafts of the rollers D, the whole forming my ogee-shaped wash-board. The end pieces of this frame are carried above the plane of the box A, and serve as handles with which to lift it, and to which a wringer may be attached. At the four corners of the box A are placed short studs or pegs a, over which I place the coil-springs b, the frame (3 resting upon said springs when it is in place. E are boxes rabbeted into and sliding in the sides of the box A, and in which the shaft F of the corrugated roller G is journaled. The boxes E are provided with flanges c, which embrace the outer and inner faces of the sides of the box A, and prevent them from splitting. In two of the flanges of each box a slot is cut to receive a latch, d, so that in passing heavy fabrics through the machine the roller G can be vertically adjusted for the purpose. The bottom of the box A is preferably made of the form shown, or double ogee in shape, which forms at the bottom a suitable reservoir, in which the sediment will collect, and which can bedrawn off through the hole stopped by the plug 6.

By setting the rollers of the wash-board in ogee shape shown the waslrboard laps further around the cylinder, whereby a greater area of the latter becomes operative upon the fabrics being cleansed. By jourpaling the shafts of the rollers D in the iron straps the friction is reduced and the durability greatly increased. By making the box in the form shown the expense of the separate sediment tank described in my aforesaid Letters Patent is saved. By providing the journal-boxes of the main shaft with flanges to overlap the ends of the slots in which they play the splitting of the sides of the wash-box is entirely obviated.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination of the removable frame 0, being a handle at each-end, as shown, the corrugated roller G, the journal-box E, constructed as described, and the latches I, constructed and arranged as set forth.
