ADJUSTABLE VALVE MECHANISM.
Application filed March 6, 1917, Serial No. 152,532.
To all whom it may concern Belt known that we, FRANK WV. HEN- RIKSON and THOMAS DAVISON, cltizens of the United States, residing at Mulberry, in.
the county of Crawford and State of Kansas, have invented a certain new and use ful Improvement in Adjustable Valve Mechanisms, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in adjustable valve mechanisms.
The object of our invention is to provide a novel valve mechanism by which two fluids, such as hot and cold water, or steam and cold water, may be intermingled, the mechanism providing for adjustably controlling the proportionsof the intermingled fluids, whereby the mixture may have any desired temperature.
The novel features of our invention are hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates the preferred embodiment of our invention,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of our improved mechanism, shown in the closed position.
Fig. 2 is a top view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Similar reference characters designate similar parts in the difierent views.
1 designates a valve casing having two inlets 2 and 3, and an outlet 4. The inlet 2 is adapted to receive a fluid, such as hot water or steam, and the inlet 3 is adapted to receive a fluid such as cold water. It is designed to intermingle the two fluids and to discharge themixture through the outlet 4. For controlling the supply of fluid entering the casing through the inlet 2, there is provided a pivotally mounted rock valve 5 having a port 6 adapted, when the valve is in the closed position shown in Fig. 3, to be closed by the casing 1. The valve 5 may be rocked to a position such that the port 6 will aline with the inlet 2. The valve 5, outside the casing 1, is provided with a crank arm 7.
A rock valve 8 pivoted in the casing 1 extends across and controls the outlet 4 and is rovided with a port 9 adapted to be closed by the casing 1, and adapted to aline with the outlet 4.
The valve 8 is provided, outside the casing 1, with a crank arm 10.

Means connecting the crank arms 7 and 10 are provided by which when the valve 8 is rockedto and from the open position, the valve 5 may be simultaneously and similarly rocked. In order that the amount of fluid supplied through the inlet 2 may be varied so as to change the temperature of the mixture, said connecting means is preferably provided with adjusting means by which the stroke of the valve 5 may be changed without changing the stroke of the valve 8. In the form of our invention, illustrated in the drawing, the mechanism connecting the cranks arms 7 and 10 comprises the follow ing described parts Pivoted to the crank arm 10 by a transverse horizontal pin 11 is a member 12 having a screw threaded end portion on which is slidably adjustably mounted a member 13 pivoted on a horizontal axis to the crank arm 7. Two nuts 14 and 15 are fitted on the threaded part of the member 12 and are adapted to releasably clamp between them the member 13. When the valve 8 is swung in one direction to the open position, the valve 5 will be swung in the reverse direction to the open position by means of the crank 10, member 12, member 13 and crank 7. By adjusting the nuts 14 and 15, the position of the member 13 on the member 12 may be changed, thereby changing the stroke of the valve 5 without changing the stroke of the valve 8. The stroke of the valve 5 may thus be adjusted so as to only partially open said valve when the valve 8 is fully open. By proper adjustment of the member 13 and the nuts 14 and 15, the amount of fluid admitted into the casing 1 through the inlet 2 may be proportioned so that the desired temperature of the mixture may be obtained. With the above described structure, the stroke of the valve 5 may be changed without dismantling 01' detachment of any of the parts.
For rocking the valve 8, it is provided, outside the casing 1, with a crank 16, which is adapted to strike a projection 17 on the outside of the casing 1 to limit the closing movement of said valve 8. The crank 16 is provided with one or more holes 18, each of which is adapted to receive the upper end of an upright rod 19, which, in opening the valves 8 and 5, may be manually pulled downwardly. For closing the valves 8 and 5 automatically, when the rod 19 is released, a coil spring 20 has its lOWer end secured to the crank 16, the upper end of the spring being secured to any suitable support 21 located above the crank 16.
In the operation of our invention, the rod 19 is manually drawn downwardly against the tension of the spring 20, thus mocking the valve 8 counter-clockwise by means of the crank 16, and rocking the valve 5 clockwise to the open or partly open position, by means of the cranks l0 and 7 and the members 12 and 13. Upon releasing. the rod 19, the spring 20 will close the valves by means of the mechanism already described.
We do not limit our invention toxthe structure shown and described, as modifications, within the scope of the appended claims, may be made without departing from the spirit of our invention.
l/Vhat we claim is 1. In an adjustable valve mechanism, a valve casing having two inlets and one outlet, two rock valves pivoted in said casing and provided each with a crank arm, one valve controlling one inlet and the other valve controlling the outlet, two members respectively pivoted to said crank arms, one member havlng a screw-threaded portion and the other member being longitudinally movable on said screw-threaded portion, and two nuts mounted on said screw-threaded portion and adapted to bear respectively against opposite sides of the other member. 2. In an adjustable valve mechanism, a valve casing having two inlets and one outlet, two rock valves pivoted in said casing and provided each with a crank arm, one valve controlling one inlet and the other valve controlling the outlet, two members respectively pivoted to said crank arms, one member having a screw threaded portion and the other member being longitudinally movable on said threaded portion, two-nuts mounted on said threaded portion and adaptedto bear respectively against opposite sides of the said other member, one of the valves having a crank, manually operated means for swinging said crank in one direction, and a spring for swinging said crank in the opposite direction.
