LOCOMOTIVE SAND-PIPE.
Application filed May 14, 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES MORREALE and JOHN LAMBERTI, citizens of the United States, residing at Scranton, in the county of Lackawanna and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Locomotive Sand-Pipes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in locomotive sand pipes, the object of the invention being to provide an improved sand pipe of this class embodying means whereby sand and water are prevented from freezing in and blocking the flow of air and sand through the pipe.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is partly an elevation and partly a sectional view of a locomotive sand pipe constructed and arranged in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same on the plane indicated by the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Our improved sand pipe comprises an inner tube 1 and an outer tube 2. The inner tube extends from end to end of the sand pipe, is open at the ends, and has its lower end somewhat curved as at 3 and reduced in diameter. The outer tube forms an annular chamber l around the inner tube, and the wall of the outer tube is united at its ends to the Wall. of the inner tube as at 5, the ends of the outer tube being reduced, as hown.
The sand pine may be made of any suitable size, but, in practice, the inner tube is of threefourths inch inside diameter, its wall being about one-eighth of an inch thick, and the outer tube is of two inches exterior diameter and has a wall one-eighth of an inch in thickness. At points between and spaced from the ends of the outer tube the sand pipe is formed with oppositely arranged radial reinforcing and joining Walls 6 which connect the walls of the inner and outer tubes serve to greatly strengthen the construction of the sand pipe and also serve Specification of Letters Patent.

A union 7 is provided at the upper end of the inner tube to enable a pipe to be coupled thereto.
The wall of the outer tube is provided near its upper end with a threaded opening 8- for the attachment of a steam pipe and said wall is provided near the lower end with a steam discharge opening 9. Steam circulates in the chamber 4: between the inner and outer tubes and around the inner tube and hence serves to keep the sand pipe thoroughly heated so that sand and Water are prevented from freezing in the inner tube and hence the inner tube is always kept free for the passage of sand and air therethrough.
While we have herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of our invention, we would have it understood that changes may be made in the form, proportion and construction of the several parts, without departing from the spirit of our invention, and within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described our invention,-
what is claimed as new is A locomotive sand pipe comprising an inner tube for the passage of sand and air and an outer tube of greater diameter than and arranged around the inner tube, the wall of the outer tube being reduced at the ends and united to the wall of the inner tube at points spaced from the ends thereof and being provided with a steam inlet opening and a steam outlet opening and forming a steam circulating chamber around the inner tube, said sand pipe being also provided with radial reinforcing walls connecting the intermediate portion of the Wall of the outer tube with the wall of the inner tube and one of said radial walls being arranged opposite the inlet and outlet openings.
