To all 4whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, OSCAR M. FUnR, a citizen of the United States, residino' at Houston, in the county of Harris and tate of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Acetylene-Gas Generators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in an acetylene gas generator.
The obj ect of the invention is to provide a generator of the character described whereby carbid may be fed automatically into the water tank so as to keep the gas pressure within the tank substantially uniform.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of means whereby the feed valve will be automatically cleaned so as to prevent' the carbid from adhering thereto and clogging the discharge outlet.
With the above and other objects in view the invention has particular relation to certain novel features of construction, operation and arrangement of parts an example of which is given in this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein:-

Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view showing the discharge opening of the carbid hopper and the valve mechanism controlling the same.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings wherein like numerals of reference designate similar parts in each of the figures, the numeral 1 refers to a cylindrical tank, which is open at the top and the upper portion of which has fixed within the same, a supplemental wall 2 concentric with and spaced from the wall of the tank 1, forming an annular chamber 3 which surrounds the supplemental wall 2. The numeral 4 refers to the tank covering having an annular depending rim 5 which fits closely within the tank 1 and whose lower free edge rests upon the annular partition 6, separating the chamber 3 from the tank 1, when the covering is completely seated on the tank. The hopper 7 is fixed to the coverin and forms therewith, an inclosed chamber which may be filled with the carbid through the opening 8 in the covering, said opening being normally closed. by the plug 9. The lower' end of the valve 11 is tapered to conform to the tapering walls of the hopper 7 so as to form a perfect fit thereagainst when the valve is seated and completely close the discharge opening. 10. Depending from one side of the hopper is the arm 14 to the lower end of ,which one end of the lever 15 is pivoted. A valve stem 16 is fixed to the lower end of the Valve andl extends through the outlet opening 10 and the lower end thereofis pivoted to the lever 15. The free end of this lever has a weight 17 which normally holds the valve closed. The upper edge of the supplemental wall 2 carries a drier formed of an annular chamber 18 filled with compressed cotton or some similar material as 19 and the bottom wall of this chamber has a plurality of perforations 20 through which the generated gas passes into the drier. An outlet pipe 21 projects up into said drier and its lower end passes through the tank 1 near the bottom and terminates in the outlet 22 which is controlled by the valve 23. The tank 1 is partially filled with water through the inlet spout 24 and the chamber 3 is also filled with water. When there is no gas pressure in the tank, the covering 4 will be completely seated as shown in Fig. 2, and the weight 17 will be held elevated relative to the discharge opening 10 by means of the upper edge of the supplemental wall 2. The hopper 7 should then be filled with carbid and a portion thereof will escape through the opening 10 and fall into the water in the tank 1 and gas will be immediately generated and the pressure threof will lift the covering 4 and when the covering is sufficiently elevated to raise the weight' 17 clear of the upper edge of the supplemental wall 2, said weight will opcrate to close the opening 10 through the valve 11 and the carbid supply will be automatically cut off. The gas thus generated will pass up through the perforations 20 and through the drier and then through the outlet pipe 21 to the place where'it is to be utilized.
