To all whom it'mag concern:
Be it known that I, Enron Ansnnovrms, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chain Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
My mvention relates to lmprovements 1n that class of pumps ordinarily known as 'chain pumps, and the object of the invention is to simplify and improve the construction of this class of pumps over the prior state of the art. To this end the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter more in detail described and the asserted novelty specifically claimed.
I have fully and clearly illustrated my invention inthe accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my invention as being ready for use.
Fig. 2 is a plan or top'view of the same.
Fig. 3 represents a view of one of the buckets or disks which elevate the water carried by the elevator chain.
Figs. 4 and 5 represent detail views.

A designates the framework of the pump within which a troughlike receptacle B is held for the water raised from a well. Within this framework is provided a transverse shaft C, which carries a wheel or pulley D, the periphery of which is concave, over which is carried the pump chain E with the water elevating buckets L, the said chain passing centrally through the buckets which are passed loosely through the longer elevator pipe or tube so that room may be given the-buckets to prevent contact with the inner surface of the longer pipe or tube. The framework which has been partly described heretofore has extension portions or legs F the lower ends of which are ri idly secured to the platform which covers t e well from which the water is drawn.
The transverse shaft has secured thereto near one end a pinion H which meshes with a cog wheel G, the cog wheel G bein secured to a short parallel shaft I eac of which shafts have their hearings in the framework of the pum on one side, and journaled in the framewor A on the opposite end of the shaft is a pinion K within the cogs of which meshes a pawl to prevent backlash of the shaft carrying the chain and buckets. This mechanism is operated by a hand wheel M, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the draw- 1n etachably secured to the underside of the platform which covers the well is a suitable reservoir and which when the pump is not in use can be laid aside, it not being essentially connected with the pump, its oflice being to contain the water elevated by the pump. From the size of the longer pipe it will be seen that there will be plenty of room for the buckets to pass through the pipe without knockin against the inner surface of the same an the motion of the water continuously flowing through the pipe when t the pump 1s in operation, prevents freezing When the operation of the water in winter. of the pump ceases the water runs down the angular space between the buckets and the tu e.
The operation of the device is as follows: The. operator when operating the pump turns the handwheel, the cog upon the short shaft meshes with the pinion on the chain and bucket wheel shaft, the pinion upon the opposite end of the shaft is provided with a dogl or pawl to prevent the shaft from backlas in operating the pump. The chain and buckets are passed up through the pipe and elevate the water from the well into the troughlike receptacle and it is then passed out from the receptacle.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a bucket wheel having a concave groove in its periphery in which are formed a series of narrow transverse slots, of chain carrying buckets adapted to engage in said slots, a discharge trough, long and short tubes extending from the bottom of said trough through which the said buckets travel and means for driving the bucket wheel.
