Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. STRAUB, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Time-Stamps, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to time stamps and has for its object the provision of an improved arrangement for the controlling and stamping elements of the device together with improved constructional features involving these setting and stamping portions.
This application is a division of my prior Patent No. 1,204,714 issued Nov. 14, 1916.
I will explain my invention more in detail by referring to the accompanying drawings illustrating one embodiment thereof in which Figure 1 is a front view partly in section of my improved time stamp;
Fig. 2 is a side view partly in section of the same, and
Fig. 3 is a detail of construction.
I utilize a suitable base plate 1 which is provided with the cup shaped recess 2 and on which a suitable cover plate 3 is mounted, which cover plate is provided with a slot 4 to permit the handle 5 to pass therethrough, which handle is the one used to cause an impression by the time stamp. The base plate has a depressed portion throughout the right half portion of its upper surface (Fig. 2) as shown more clearly at 6, and on top of this a plate 7 is placed which runs throughout the entire length of the top of the base and projects over at 8. A small portion of this plate is cut-away as shown at 9 to permit all of the type wheels and the driving mechanism comprising the stamping device 10 to be depressed upon the top of the base 1. ,It will be seen that there is thus provided a groove as shown at 6 running entirely the length of the machine which is to accommodate the paper or card upon Wl'llCll The printing wheels of the stamping mechanism 10 are all to the right of the plate 7 so as to form Serial No. 131,063.

The impression or stamping device 10 together with the various elements carrying the same and operated by the handle 5 are all mounted on a suitable plate 11 which is laid on top of the plate 7 and then fastened in place through the agency of suitable screws not herein shown. This structure which is designed to cause periodic actuation of the impression device is similar in general arrangement to that disclosed in my Patent No. 1,200,043, issued Oct. 3, 1916. This structure including all this mechanism is mounted between two side walls 12 and 13 and includes a pair of toggle levers 14, 14 and 15, 15 at whose lower extremities the impression mechanism is pivotally carried. The handle 5 actuates this mechanism so as to depress the impression mechanism 10 to cause a rapid impression of the impression device which then recoilsautomatically so that this impression device cannot be held in its depressed condition. The lower extremities of the toggle members are held together by a shaft 16 and this is also mounted in and carried by a pair of arms 17 pivotally mounted on a shaft 18 fastened in the side members 12 and 13. The arms 17 are spanned by a bridge 1.9,which bridge normally rests on top of a cam 20 carried by the lever 21 which is fixedly secured to the handle 5. The lever 21 to which the handle 5 is securely fastened is pivotally mounted upon the shaft 21*. The upper extremity of the toggles 14, 14 are pivotally held upon a shaft 22 secured in the side members. The meeting extremities of the toggle members 14,14 and 15, 15 are pivotally mounted upon a shaft 23. The shaft 23 is connected by means of a spring 24 to a rocking arm 25 pivotally mounted upon the shaft 18. The arm 21 carries a pivotally mounted cam 26 which impinges against the arm 25 whenever the lever 5 is moved in a clockwise direction (Fig. 2). Whenever the movement of the arm 21 has progressed far enough, then the upper transverse extremity 27 of the arm 25 slides upwardly and over the top of this cam 26. Before the arm 25 how ever is released it has exerted a pull through .occur as -the bridge 19 rests on the cam 20 until the arm 5 has been moved-far enough in a'clockwise direction to release the bridge 'l9, at which time the spring 24 quickly draws the shaft 23 to the right '(Fig. 2) and causes an impression upon the card placed in the slot at6. Thissarm 29 through the agency of the spring 31, partly broken away in Fig. 2, acts on a lever 32, which lever is pivoted tothe. arm 17 as shown. in dotted lines in Fig;:2. This arm 32carries a. cam shaped extremity 33.. which is adapted to engage a star. wheel 34 formingpart of the type wheel mechanism, thus: to accurately aline a type wheel that may not. be. in ali-nement, whenever the arm 5 is. first moved to cause an impression. Movement of the arm 32: also causes aswinging movement. of the arm 35 because thislatter arm iscon-nected by means ofalink 36. to. thearm32. This arm 35 carries a roller 37 adapted. toen-gage the star pinions .38" which. servev to. transmit the movement between, the. various type wheels.
' Thus whenever the-.arm35! is so. actuated tohave its roll 37 engage the star wheels38 as when an impression is being made, then the controlling mechanism which sets the type wheels is prevented from actuating said type wheels during the time that this impression is being made. A. ribbon 39 is provided which-is. associated with two-take up rolls 40.,and 41. respectively, each provided with a ratchet 42,- 43 respectively. The. ribbon also passes-about rollers 44, 45, 46- andf47, andthus is; carriedby under the typefwheels as clearly apparent from Fig. 1.

I have thus described: one form which; my invention may take; and it will be readily? apparent: that many modifications; may! be made without departing from the spirit of my said invention. Having however thus described one form which my invention may take, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A device of the character described comprising a base, type wheels movably carried by said base, horological mechanism for periodically setting said type wheels mounted upon said base, toggle mechanism, a manually operated handle for at will operating said type wheels into a printing position, means for causing an automatic recovery of the toggle mechanism after actuation, and
' means controlled and movable with said handle for alining said type wheels.
2. A device of the character described comprising a base, type wheels movably carried by said base, horological mechanism for periodically setting said type wheels mounted upon said base, toggle mechanism, a manually operated handle for at will operating said type wheels into a printing position, means for causing an automatic recovery of the toggle mechanism after actuation, and

3. A device of the character described comprising a base, type wheels movably carried by said base, horological mechanism for periodically setting said type wheels mounted upon said base, toggle mechanism, a manually operated handle for at will operating said type wheels into a printing position, means for causing an automatic recovery of the toggle mechanism after actuation, means controlled and movable with said handle for alining said type wheels, and means controlled by and movable with said handle for preventing setting of said type Wheels during the printing actuation.
