To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN J. RILEY, a citizen of the United States, residin at La Cygne, in the county of Linn and tate of Kansas, have invented certain useful Improvements in Automatic Air-Valves, of Which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to improvements in automatic air controlling valves for explosive engines, and more particularly for the engines used upon motor cars, one object of the invention being the provision of a valve adapted to be connected at the fork of the intake manifold, whereby during the pulsation of the engine, the air is directed to the manifold at a point between the carbureter and the intake port of the engine.
A further object of the present invention is the provision of an air inlet valve which is simple and durable in construction and which is readily placed in position for use.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a diagrammatic view of an explosive engine showing the carbureter and intake manifold equipped with the present valve.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the valve.
Figs. 3 and 4 are detailed views of parts of the valve.
Fig. 5 is a top plan view of the device.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 5 designates the carbureter and 6 the manifold, the present air valve 7 being attached in a port 8 of the manifold at a point be tween the intake of the engine 9 and the carburetor.
This valve comprises a casing 9 having its main bore enlarged as at 11, the enlarged end of said casing being provided with the threaded portion 12, the valve seat 13 and the air inlet ports 14.
A valve stem 15 is adapted to project through the bore of the casing 9 and carries upon its inner end the valve 16 which normally is seated upon the seat 13. The outer end of the stem 15 is threaded as at and abutting respectively the annular shoulder 22 thereof and the adjusting nut 18.
By this means the spring 20 normally holds the valve 16 seated and in such a manner that the spring may be adjusted at any desired tension according to the requirements of the engine. It will be no ticed that a bracket 23 is secured upon the outer end of the valve casing and extending outwardly therefrom is a pin. Fulcrumed upon this pin is a segmental or sector shaped plate 25 serving as a cam and adapted, when it is turned, to have its curved edge wedged against the knurled adjusting nut 18 of the valve stem so as to be locked in frictional engagement with the same. There is an actuating rod 410 pivotally secured to the plate 25 by-means of which the plate can be turned upon the pivot 24 into and out of locked frictional relationship with the head of the valve stem.
This valve lock is operably connected to the throttle, not shown, so that the same may be readily operated from the seat of the motor car.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings, it is evident that with a device of this character, a better mixture of air with the explosive charge after passing through the carbureter is provided, and also that with the present device the admission of air may be regulated to an exactness and in proportion to the power of the engine.
What I claim as new is In a device of the class described, in combination, a valve casing, a support therefor, said casing at its inner end having a valve seat, a valve stem in said casing having a valve shaped to fit said seat, said valve stem having a threaded portion projecting beyond said casing, a knurled adjusting nut 18 mounted upon the threaded projecting portion of said valve stem, a spring of lesser diameter than said adjusting nut engaging the latter as Well as the outer end of said to hold said adjusting nut locked against casing, a bracket secured to said casing, an movement to compress said spring, and an outwardly projecting pin formed on said operating arm for turning said segmental 10 bracket, a segmental plate fulcrumed on said plate upon its pivot to locked or released 5 pin and adapted to have its curved edge position.
