HENRY NEUMAN', OF SCAPPOOSE, OREGON.
PEN-POINT RELEASER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 21, 1919.
Application filed May 23, 1918. Serial No. 236,186.
To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that I, HENRY NEUMAN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Scappoose, in the county of Columbia and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pen-Point Releasers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a pen point releaser and has for its principal object the production of a device which is so arranged as to firmly hold the pen point when the same is in use although upon the pressing of the operating rod, the pen point will be released.
Another object of this invention is the production of a pen point releaser wherein the clamping jaw is carried upon the rocking yoke so that the clamping jaw may be swung downwardly from engagement with the pen point, thereby releasing the same.
With these and other objects in view, this invention consists of certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a detail perspective view of the device illustrating the same in use,
Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section through the pen point releaser, a portion of the holder being broken away.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the clamping jaw, portions of the elements used in conncction with the clamping aw being shown in section and also in elevation.
F ig. t s a detail perspective view of the clamping jaw, the sleeve and the rocking Yoke.
' Fig. 5 is a sectional view through the clamping jaw.
Fig. 6 is a longitudinal section through the spring housing, illustrating the means by. which the rod is normally urged in one direction.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals, it will be seen that the pen point rcleaser comprises a holder 1 having the longitudinal bore 2 extending therethrough. A neck 3 is formed upon the holder 1 so as to carry the tube 1 in which there is positioned a coil spring 5. A rod 6 is reciprocally mounted through the bore 2 and extends through the coil spring 5 as shown clearly in Fig. 6 so as to have its threaded end 7 carried by the knob 8. The
coil spring 5 bears upon one end of the neck 11 is generally formed of rubber or some similar material.
The cylindrical frame 12 is mounted upon the holder 1 within the sleeve 9 as shown clearly in Fig. 2. This cylindrical frame 12 has a semi-circular extension 13 extending therefrom which projects for a considerable distance beyond the abutment tongue 14 which has an abutment lip 15 at right angles and is spaced from the extension 13. The rocking yoke comprises a bridge 16 having the parallel side arms 17 extending at right angles thereto and these side arms 17 terminate in the outwardly extending ends 18. These outwardly extending ends 18 are pivotally mounted upon the extension 13 of the cylindrical frame 12 and in this mannor, it will be seen that the rocking frame will be pivotally supported. The clamping jaw 19 is formed from a blank of sheet metal and although elongated is substantially semi-circular in cross section adjacent .its forward end. Adjacent the inner end of the clamping jaw 19 there is formed a pair of parallel walls 20 of considerable less breadth than the breadth of the forward end of the clamping jaw. The bridge 16 of the rocking yoke passes through the walls 20 and by having the walls 20 parallel, it will be seen that the parallel arms 17 of the rocking yoke may be passed thereby without interference. Furthermore, it will be seen that the parallel walls 20 are positioned within planes extending along the side surfaces of the forward end of the clamping jaw 19 and the arm 17 of the rocking yoke will also be positioned within planes so as to freely move without binding the clamping jaw upon the extension. 13 of the cylindrical frame 12. The rod 6 is offset as shown at 21 thereby providing an offset extension 22 which is secured to the under side of the clamping jaw 19 as by soldering or in any other suitable manner.
When the pen point releaser is in operation, it is obvious as above explained, that the rod 6 will be urged in one direction by the spring 5. Since this rod 6 has its offset extension 22 fixedly mounted upon the clamping aw 19, this clamping jaw will be urged toward the inner end of the sleeve 9 and toward the cylindrical frame 12. The inward movement of the clamping jaw 9 will be limited at all times by its abutment against the depending lip of the abutment tongue 14 as shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 1. As
. a consequence, it will be seen that the rock ing yoke 17 will be prevented from swinging over so far as to cause the clamping jaw to bind in such a position within the sleeve 9 as to prevent its efficient operation. When it is desired to insert a pen point in the holder, the knob 8 is pushed inwardly into the tube 4: so as to compress the coil spring 5. This action will move the rod 6 forwardly and as a consequence will causethe clamping jaw 19 to be swung forwardly and downwardly from the sleeve 9 at which time a pen point 23 may be positioned so as to bear upon the inner side of the sleeve 9 and at this time the knob 8 may be released. The coil spring 5 .will again expand to its normal position thus causing the knob to draw upon the rod 6 and as a consequence, the clamping jaw 19 will be swung upon the rocking yoke 17 and into a binding engagement with the pen point 23 as shown in Fig. 2. In this manner, it will be seen that the pen point will be releasably retained very firmly in position for use. When it is desired to release the pen point 23, the rod is again moved for- ,wardly by pressure upon the knob 8, thus causing the clamping jaw to move forwardly and downwardly so as to provide considerable space between the clamping jaw and the sleeve 9, which action will cause the pen point 23 to be released so as to cause the pen point to drop from engagement with the sleeve and the clamping jaw. Thus it will be seen that the pen point may be more easily released than with the ordinary releasing pen holders now in use for the pen holders now used merely cause the clamping elements to slide forwardly in the same parallel plane it normally bears with respect to its retaining sleeve so that in case the pen point rusts within the retaining sleeve, it is usually necessary to grip the pen point and pull the same from engagement ,with the holder. In this device, however, the moving of the clamping jaw 19 will cause its upper top portion to be spaced for a considerable distance from the inner portion of the sleeve 9 in alinement therewith and the pen point will either drop from the device or upon being struck will be removed in case it has rusted in position.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that a very efficient pen point releaser has been provided which may be cheaply manufactured owing to its being formed of sheet metal and which is so constructed as to positively retain the pen point in position although upon the movement of the clamping jaw to one side the pen point may ally mounted upon said frame, a sleeve car-' ried by said pen holder, said clamping j aw being adapted to releasably hold a pen point in engagement with said sleeve, and means for swinging said pen point forwardly and away from the clamping portion of said sleeve whereby said pen point may be released.
