To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR HOUGH, of
Quebec, Dominlon of Canada, a subject of the King of Great Britain, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Condensers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to condensing systems and more particularly to systems of the multiple condenser type; and it may be said briefly to consist of a condenser unit adapted to present a plurality of condensing members affording relatively large condensing surfaces, each member being constructed and arranged to have the cooling medium pass through the same in one direction only in contradistinction to the prevailing method of causing the current to flow in a Zig-zag or circuitous path through the unit. The efl'ect is that in my condenser there is uniformity of temperature throughout each level in a unit containing a multiplicity of members, whereas, in the condensers heretofore used a considerable variation in temperatures occurs throughout each level owing to the fact that the condensing medium is made to pass through different levels more than once and each time its condensing elliciency is lessened.
For full comprehension, however, of my invention reference must be had to the accompanying-drawings in which similar reference characters indicate the same parts, and wherein:

I have illustrated my invention applied to an apparatus for condensing nitric acid although it may be utilized for other condensing operations, without departing from the spirit of my `nvention.
In order to resist the action of such acids as nitric I prefer to make all its parts of a high ferro-silicon mixture.

The condenser body, or container 2, is oblong in plan view and slightly upwardly flared, with shoulders 3 and 4 at its topand bottom to support top and bottom plates by which my improved condenser members are carried and holes 10 and l2 for connection of the fume pipes (not shown).
The bottom plate, indicated at 5, conforms to the bottom of the container or body 2 and has preferably seven rows of four holes 6 beveled to serve as seats for the condenser members; while between these rows of seats are series of ports 7 through which the condensed acid finds its way to the outlet 8 of the condenser.
The top plate is divided into as many parts, 20, as there are rows of condenser members. They rest on the shoulders 3 and have holes 12 for the condenser members to pass through, the holes being in `vertical alinement with the seats 6 andadapted to space the members and retain them in verticalY position.
The condensing members are an important feature of this invention and consist ofA straight tubes 25 of relatively large bore having their lower ends closed and rounded and their upper ends formed with mouths the lips 26 of which extend horizontally. These tubular members are inserted through the top plates and seated in the bottom plate and disposed with their lips overhanging and communicating with a pair of troughs 28 and 29 supported on brackets fastened to the top of the container.
The condensing medium, water in this case, is supplied to the bottom of these condenser members and overflows from them into the troughs and thence to waste. According to the present embodiment of my invention a series of tubes 30, preferably glass, are located in the members by being suspended by rubber tubing' 31 from pipes 32 connected to and supplied by headers 33 fed from any available supply through T-connections 34. ln the operation of my improved multiple system condenser the fumes pass through the same from the pipe connection l0 to the pipe connection 12 and impinge upon the condenser' members during their passage. These condenser members are all maintained at the same temperature by the fact that the water serving as the condensing medium is conducted to the bottom of each member and moves slowly upwardly therein, flowing into the troughs; whilel efficiency is comparatively high each member being of straight tubular form, `vertically arranged and of relatively large diameter the effect being that the aggregate cooling surface within the condenser is relatively large. rlhus the condensing efficiency is high and4 practically uniformly maintained throughout the unit.
