Description
WILLIAM U. GRIFFITHS, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVAN-IA.
WALL ONNCTN FR PLUMBINGFIXTURES.
Specifcation of Letters atent.
Patented Jan. 21, 1919;
Aiiflicatio'n 'fired Ma 1'2, 1915. serial No. 27,491.
To all whom it 'may cnc'e''n:
Be' it known that 13,\ WILLIAM U.- Gererrr'H's, a citizen of the United states and a resident of the city of Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, State of Penn'sylvania, have nvented certain 'new and useful Improvements in Wall Connections for Plumbing Fixtures of which the following s a speeifi'c'ation.
Bro'adly speaking, my invention relats to pnmbing fixtures and has arti'cula'r rela tien te 'an' improved means 'or connectng a closet bowl, sin-k or the liketo the upper end of a soil or outletpipe, such 'clost bowl, sink 'or the like' being. supported against theside of a wall.
One of the objeets of my invention is to 'provide a Construction sheh that the operation and work necessary in making the con ne'ction between the closet bowl', sin'k or'the like' and the upper endof a soil 'or outlet pipe is greatly simplified and cheapened.
A further object is to provide a 'Construction whereby the closet bowl, sink or the like may berea'dil'y adj'nsted and 'positioned with respect to the end of the soil or' ou'tlet pipe.
A still furthei" object of my invention is to proiide a Construction whereb'y the connections between the bowl, sink or the like are completely concealed and hidden from View;
Other obj'ects and advantages of my in- Vention will be referred to in the detailed description ther'eof which follows or will be apparent from such description.
- Inthe accmpa'nying drawings I have illustrated certain convenient embodiments of my invention but it Will be nnderstood that changes in the details of Construction may be made within' the sco'pe of the claims without departing from my inveition.
In the drawingsz-' Figure 1 is a 'View in which the upper end portion of the soilor outlet 'pipo and the greatfer portion 'of a clo'set bowl are shown in side elevatior while a section of the co'n'- nection between the two is shown taken in a central' vertical plane ext-ending from front to rea-'r of the deviee;
Fig. 2 is a central` vertical section of the u-pper'endof the soil or outlet p'ipe and of a member' of the connecting means 'Secured thejreto;
Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical sectional View taken on the line 3- -3 of Fig-. 1;
Fig. 4 is aview' in per'spectiveot amd&-
fied form of one member of the connecting means; and 4 Fig'. 5 is a 'View taken on the line 5-5 of Fig". 4 With the parts of the connectin'g means in assembled relation With respect to each other. i
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the bowl of a water closet having a seat 2 pivotally connected therewith. The Water for finshing the closet is admitted from a pipe (not shown) having 'connection With the bowl 'at the point 3 or at any other con- Venient point. The rear end of the bowl is provided with what maybe termed a pro'- jecti'on 5 having a flange 6" which terminates the same and which constitutes a head for fitting into and coperating With 'asocket member 8 constituting a member of the connecting means; The rearwardly projecting end portion ofthe bowl l is also provided With a flange-like portion 10 which extends beyond and is space'd from the head 6 so that when the bowl is in position against the 'side of a wall, as 11, the connections by means of which the bowl is supported are eonceald and hidden from View, thereby prodi' cing a very neat and sightly appearing etf'ect. he edges of the npper horiznt'al portion and the depending 'portions 'of the flange 10 rest against the wall 11 when the fixture is in place.
The socket member 8 of the connection in the Construction shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 of the drawing is' gene'ally speaking of rectangular shape but is somewhat wider at the top (which is open) than at the bottom, 'as is clearly shown in Figs. I and 2 of the drawing. e i
The front wall of the sock'et member 8 of the fastening is substanti'ally ertical, that is to say, it is arrange'd substantiall'y at right angl'es to the axis of the outlet opening' 12 leading from the bowl 1 to the soil or Ontlet pip'e 13. The pposite 'or rear wall of the scket member 8 is inclined from the toptoward the bottom as shown. side of the head 6 is correspondingly' inclined so that when the said head is placed within the socket the rear surface or face thereof is in' substantial parallel relatio'n to the inner face or surface 'of the rear Wall of the soeket member 8;
When the head is placed in position within' the so'cket member as 'described the projecting or neck portion 5 which connects the head 6 to the' main` body of the closet The rear bowl l extends ntoa nntch or opening 15 in the front upright or vertical wall of the socket member 8.' r r In order to insure that the joint between the rear surface or face of the head 6 and the adjacent opposing inner surface or face i' of the inclined rear wall of the socket member 8 shall be water-tight I have provided a* Washer 16 of suitable material.
For the purppse of drawing the head 6 firmly and tightly down into the socket member 8 I have provided in the lower edge of the said head a screw-threaded opening or hole 17, as indcated, with which is eng aged 'a screw-threaded bolt 18 which eX- tends upwardly through a hole 19 in the bottom wall of the socket member 8. j The rear inclined wall of the socket menber 8 isprovided with a screw-;hreaded openin 20 which is surrounded by an an` nular ange 21 of the same internal diameter as the opening 20 and which is correspondiigly screw-threaded by means of which said socket member 8 'is adaptedto be' connected with and disconnected from the screw-'threaded `end of the soil or outlet pipe 13. i
When the socket member 8 has been i screw'ed on to the screw-thread end of the soil or outlet pipe 13 it is held insuch position by means of a clamping screw 23 which is provided in the lower side of the flange 21 as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawin s. i i
In`F1gs. 4 and 5 I have shown a modified constructionof connecting means comprising a socket member 30 having a rectangular socket or opening, open at its top, and which is of the same internal width or 'thickness both at its top and bottom. It is provided with a notch or opening 15 and with a screw-threaded opening 31 surrounded by an annular fiange 32 of the same internal diameter as the opening 31 and which is also screw-threaded. The socket 30 is provided with flanges 33 at its rear opposite edges which are adapted to rest in contact with a wall against which the closet bowl sink or the like fiXt-ure' is supported. The rear wall of the socket member 30 is provided with a plurality-of holes or openings 35 through which headed screw-threaded bolts 36 extend and engage screw-threaded holes 37 in a head 38' corresponding to the head 6 illustra'ted in Figs.
1 and 2 of the drawings. v
Interposed between the head 38 and th opposing rear wall of the socket member 30 is a Washer 40 which extends around the opening 31. When the head 38 has been placed in position within the socket of the ..socket member 30 the joint between the said head and the rear wall of said socket may be made water tght by screwing up the screw-threadedirbolts .36 so as to force the Washer 10 firmly against the rear surface of the said head.
The said socket member 30 is secured upon the acljacent upper end of the soil or outlet pipe in the same manner as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing.
The internal diameter of the soil or outlet pipe 13 is greater than the diameter of socket member being thereafter screwedon to the screw-'threaded upper end ofthesoil or ou''let pipe 13. If preferred, however, the socket member may be first placed ,upon the screw-threaded upper end of the soil or outlet 'pipe and the head` 6'.thereafter placed in the socket member and drawn downwardly by means of the screw-threaded bolt 18 so as to firmly clamp the rear wall of the socket member 8 and thesaid head together. i y i In assembling the parts of 'the structure shown in Figs. 4 and 5 the socket member must first be securedupon the head 38 and the front wall of said socket member drawn 'tightly up "against thewasher interposed between the said rear wall and 'the rear surface of the head 38 by means of the tightening screw-threaded bolts 36. 'r
While I have shown herein two difl'erent ways of securing and fastening the socket and thehead together it should be understood that my invention in its broader aspect is not limited to any specific means of securing the two partstogethernor in its In assembling the structure as illustrated i 1. In 'a plumbing fixture, thecom'bination of an outlet pipe, a socket Secured to and supported upon the said outlet pipasaid socket having a notch in its front'side, a
closet bowl having a rearwardlyextending projection comprising neck and head por.-
tionssaid portions occupying the said no'tch` and socket respectively, and a flange for-med upon said pro ection and` eXtending rear- ,wardly to partially surround and conceal the said 'socket member.
.2. In a plumbing fixture, the combination of a pipe, a socket member supportedupon said pipe, the front wall of said socket member being substantially vertical and the rear wall thereof 'being inclined rearwardly,
and a--bowl provided with-a socket engaging portion, the front side of which is substantially vertical and the real' side of which inclines rearwardly =to adapt the same to the said socket, substantially as described.
3. In a plumbing fixture, the combination of a pipe, a socket member detachably connected with the end of said ppe, the central portion of 'the front Wall of said soeket member being cut away, a bowl having a rearwardly extending neck portion provided with lateral flanges, which flanges are adapted to fit into the said socket and the portion which extends rearwardly from said bowl being adapted to fit into the cut away portion of the front wall of said socket member, su'bstantially as described.
4. In a plum'bing fixture, the combination of a pipe, a socket member having an opening through its rear wall in which opening the end of said pipe is Secured and the front wall of said socke't member having a relatvely large open ended noteh formed therein, a 'bowl having a rearwardly extendng projeetion, saidprojection having lateral fiange portions upon its rear end, which WILLIAM U. GRIFFITHS.
