I also provide the car with mechanism, indicated generally by the reference character C, for rendering the controller inoperative. My invention is not necessarily limited to the specific character or mode of operation of this mechanism, and naturally the selection of an appropriate train of parts is within the province of the skilled mechanic. The mechanism may render the controller inoperative by looking it in neutral position, or by breaking or otherwise affect- .ing the condition of a circuit, such that it would be impossible to start the car by the controller even if the latter could be moved. I prefer, however, to do both.
Briefly describing the specific car mechanism illustrated, 13 is a slide bar, appropriately mounted and guided beneath the floor of the car, 14 is a circuit-breaker having a projecting arm 15 in the path of a projection 16 on said bar, 17 is a rock-shaft, havmg an arm 18 engaged by the slide bar, and 19 is a. lockin rod pivoted to another arm 20 on said mel -shaft and extending upward through a guide tube 21 inside the casing of 85 the controller. The upper end of this rod is normally out of operative relation to a notched part 22 on the controller lever, but when the slide-bar is moved rearward the consequent working of the shaft raises the locking rod into engagement with or into the path of said notched part. Inclined portions or ways lead to the notch so as to guide the rod into the notch and thus permit the lever to be locked when released by the operator.
The contacting part 23, preferably in the form of a vertical shoe having curved ends, is carried by the forward end of the slide bar 13, being thereby connected with or 100 forming part of the car mechanism C. This contacting-part is adapted to cooperate with other contacting parts 24 at the several landings, for the purpose of coordinating the car mechanism with the shaft gate locks.

. The object of this invention is to'provide means for positively insuring the locking of elevator shaft doors before the car canbe started from the respective landings. It is to be noted that the operator can open the door only when his car is at the landing. The height of the contact memdetermines a certain permissible range above or below the exact coincidence with the landing within which the door'can be opened. Above and below these limits the contacting member 24 is barred by rigid guards 4 1, 42, carried by the car in vertical alinement with the shoe 23, so that if an attempt is made to open the gate when the part 24, or a part of its operating mechanism, isopposite one of these guards the operator will find it impossible to move the slide rod 34L to the right so as to disengage the door lock.
While I have shown and described a suitable and preferred embodiment of my invention, I wish it to be understood that numerous changes and reversals may be made without departing from its scope.
What I claim as new is;
1. In an elevator safety system, a horizontal rigid slide at the landing mounted for movement perpendicularly to the plane of the landing door toward and from the elevator shaft, a spring for urging said slide into the path'of the door to bar the same against opening, means on the door for moving said slide inwardly of the shaft to release the door, an automatic detent at the landing for holding said slide in its inward position against the action of the spring, and means whereby the door in closing frees the slide from the detent.
2. In an elevator safety system, the combination of a rigid contact member movably mounted on the car for fore and aft movement transversely of the gap between the car and landing, a controller lock con nected therewith, a horizontal springpressed slide adjacent the landing door also movable transversely to the gap, said slide being normally in looking relation to the door and having a contact portion to cooperate with the contact member on the car, and an automatic detent adapted to hold said slide in its unlocked position and to be disengaged by the door in closing.
3. The combination with a landing door, a handle thereon, avertical rock-shaft on the door operated by said handle, a doorlocking device near the bottom of the door, means on the lower portion of the rock-shaft for displacing said device from looking position, and a contacting portion connected with said device, of a cooperative contacting member on the car, a car controller, and means connected with the said ear member for rendering said controller inoperative.
4. The combination with a landing door,
a horizontal slide rod thereon, a vertical rock-shaft connected with the end of the said slide rod, said rock-shaft mounted on the rear portion of the door, an arm on the lower end of the rock-shaft, a. spring-urged door-locking bolt on the landing in position to be acted upon by said arm, and a con' tacting portion connected with said bolt, of a cooperative contacting member on the car, a car controller, and means connected with the said ear member for rendering said controller inoperative.
5. The combination with a landing door, a spring-urged part for locking said door, an automatic detent adapted to engage an hold said part in its unlocked osition free of the door, and means where y the door disengages said detent in closing, of a carcontroller, means on the car forrendering the controller inoperative, and cooperative c contacting portions on the car and at the landing to establish operative connection between the said means on the car and the door-locking means at the landing.
6. In an elevator lock, the combination of an elevator shaft door, a lock for the same. means on the elevator car for breaking a circuit controlling the movement of the car, and mechanism including cooperative contacting portions connected respectively with said lock and circuit-breaking means for coordinating these instrumentalities.
7. The combination with an elevator shaft door and a lock for the same, of a controller in the elevator car, a lock for said controller, means on the car for breaking a circuit controlling the movement of the car, and means for connecting said controller lock and circuit-breaking means with said door look when the car is at the landing.
8. In combination with an elevator shaft door and with an elevator car having a controller and suitable mechanism for rendering the same inoperative, of a slide at the landing having a portion for locking said door and a portion cooperative with said mechanism on the car, and a detent for holding said slide when the latter is moved to unlock the door, and a spring for restoring the slide said detent being disengaged by the 115 closing of the door.
9. In combination with an elevator shaft door and with an elevator car having a controller and suitable mechanism for rendering the same inoperative, of a movable element 120 at the landing serving both as a lock for the said door and as a contacting part cooperative with the part of said mechanism on the car, a detent for holding said element when the latter is moved to unlock the door, a 12 spring ment.
