PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN H. ROBBINS, OF BETHEL, OREGON, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND SAMUEL ROBBINS, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED HARVESTERS AND THRASHERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 129,171, dated J nly 16, 1872.
Specification describing a Combined Harvester and Thrasher, invented by JOHN H. ROBBINS, of Bethel, in the county of Polk and State of Oregon.
The invention will first be fully described and then clearly pointed out in the claims.
Figure 1 of drawing is a vertical sectional longitudinal elevation of the carriage, separator, and cleaning mechanism. Fig. 2 is a front elevation, and Fig. 3 is a plan view.
A represents the combined machine; B, the header; and O the traveling-carriage, which transports the separator, cleaner, bagger, header, and all the mechanism for operating them. The header B has bar b jointed to the carriage G by a double hinge, 0, so as to allow it two movements-one a rolling movement, and the I other a vertical movementof the outerend.
The header B is supported against any backward movement by the pivoted brace N. The object of this is to allow vertical end play to the header in case of unevennessin the ground or obstacles in its path, and also to allow of its front being raised or lowered. The bar b and brace 11 are also preferably made adjustable to suit different heights of straw. b is a pitman, provided with a hook at its outer end, and b a pivoted rod, vibrated by said pitm an in order to reciprocate the cutter-bar b. The rod b is adjustably hinged in the bearingbox I), and has a plate, 12 having several holes, into either of which the hook of the pitman may rest. The throw of the rod b being small must be very exact, since otherwise it is liable to strike and bump against the guide I) of the fin ger-bar. This may actually occur in practice from the springing of the pitman; hence, my object is to prevent this, by slightly extending the throw of the rod 12 This I accomplish by moving the hook of pitman back into a rearward hole. b is an extension of header, to which is attached a front support or lever, B. This support is pivoted adjustably in the upright 11, and used as a lever, which is adjusted by rod d lever 6?, and stop-frame W. The object of this mechanism is to enable the header to be adjusted in its front elevation to suit the varying heights of straw in the same or different fields. By this construction the header may receive any moderate adjustment from the driver without leaving his seat, and,if greater is needed, by also lowering the fulcrum of lever D. E is an endless carrier, which transfers the grain from the header up the inclined framee and delivers it to the endless carrier F, which discharges it upon the thrashing-cylinder G.
The drawing shows certain details of construction in the thrashing part of the machine which are not herein described, since it is proposed to make them the subject of a separate application or applications.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A header, B, held by a pivoted brace, b against any backward movement, while it is caused, on a double joint, to play in the two directions herein described by means of extension 1) and lever D in front of the machine, as and for the purpose described.
2. The hook-pitman I) combined with arod, b provided withplates b b having each a series of holes, and arranged as and for the purpose described.
3. The lever D provided with rod 01 and hand-lever 01 in combination with the header. extension N, as and for the purpose described.
J. H. ROBBINS.
