CHARLES EDWARD ALLEN, 0F MONTREAL, QUEBEC, CANADA.
RAIL-ANCHOR.
Application filed February 26, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES EDWARD ALLEN, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and resident of 167 Belgrave avenue, in the city of Montreal, Province of Quebec, in the Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Anchors; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
The invention relates to improvements in rail anchors as described in the present specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings that form part of the same.
The invention consists essentially in the novel construction whereby the device is mounted on the base of the rail and engages the tie in a railway road bed and grips said base of the rail no matter which way the said rail may be inclined to creep.
The objects of the invention are to devise a simple and cheap anchor to prevent the rail from creeping forwardly or backwardly as the case may be, to effectively grip the rail, and generally to provide a means of holding the rails of a railway from creeping, which will not seriously increase the maintenance of the road and at the same time will be durable and efficient in all respects.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the device.
Fig.3 is a rear elevation of the anchor.
Fig. 4: is a perspective detail of a roller.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
Referring to the drawings, 1 is the top of the anchor having in its underside the recesses at, said recesses 41: having the bed 5 areshaped in longitudinal section. The back 10 extends downwardly from the top 1 and has the bolt 8 therethrough.
The retaining flange 11 extends outwardly Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 21, 1919.
Serial No. 10,845.
at the opposite end to the lug 12 in alinement therewith, the upper ends of flange 11 and lug 12 forming with the top a recess or jaw 2 for the base 3 of the rail, said lug 12 in the other member of a pair of such anchors engaging the rail base on the opposite side, both anchors being arranged to abut the tie.
The rollers 6 have the longitudinal cor rugations 7 and are laid transversely in the recesses at, so that when the rail begins to creep, the tendency of the rollers is to engage the beds of the recesses in the shallower parts thus making the grip tighter and practically anchoring said rail, as retaining flange 11 is in engagement with the tie or sleeper.
The anchor is secured to the rail base by the bolt 8, which may extend through another anchor on the opposite side of the rail and mounted on the base and having a similar bolt hole, said bolt being secured by a nut screw threaded thereon.
The casting of this anchor is provided with reinforcing ribs 13, 14, 15, and 16.
What I claim is:
A rail anchor comprising a back, top, retaining flange extending downwardly at one end and a lug at the other end engaging the underside of the base of the rail, said top having recesses in its under side arc-shaped in longitudinal section and engaging the top of the said rail base, and corrugated rollers inserted in said recesses transversely and adapted to grip tighter at each movement of the'rail by engagement with the recess bed at the sh'allower portion.
Signed at the city of Montreal, Quebec, Canada, this fourth day of January, 1915.
CHARLES EDWARD ALLEN.
