IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR DRILLING OIL-WELLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 129,129, dated July 16, 1872.
Specification describing certain Improvements in Machine for Drilling Oil-Wells, by VICTOR GRETTER, of Petroleum Centre, in the county of Venango and State of Pennsyl- Vania.
My invention consists of a stuffing-box, properly secured to the ordinary casing-head, with a hollow plunger passing through. The object of the hollow plunger is to allow the drilling-cable to pass through it, and by woolding or wrapping, or by the use of a 'stuffing-box, secure the plunger to the cable at any required point for the purpose of preventing the escape of oil or gas While drilling.
B is a hollow plunger, secured to the drilling-cable by Woolding or wrapping W, or by packing in the stuiiug-box K, and working through stuffing-box B, which is secured to casing-head H by set-screws S S in plate I claimv The combination of the stuing-box B an the reciprocating plunger R, constructed as described, and attached by the Woolding W to thedrilling-cable, with the casing-tube C having the lateral openings E E, all arranged Y and operating as and for the purpose specied.
