ably that the governor mechanism when actuated by a danger speed of the elevator, will also operate a switch to throw out the power, whereby the brake mechanism on the car, as well as the power cut-out, are automatically actuated by the influence of a predetermined elevator speed.
Of course, this emergency provision is functional during the travel of the elevator, when through overweighting or breaking of primary controls, or for other unaccount' able reasons, the control of the elevator speed is lost, at which time the speed acceleration beyond normal operates through the governor to shut ofi the power and to function the safety brake.
The invention is applied to the type of elevator controlling mechanisms wherein an endless cable is arranged in the elevator shaft, weighted at its lower end and its upper end passing over a governor wheel, the cable being attached at a suitable place to the elevator so that normally it travels in unison therewith. There is a brake mechanism on the under side of the car, operative in relation to the tracks or guide rails of the shaft and actuated by ,a cable mechanism on the car, one end of which is attached to the governor cable, and the invention pro vides means whereby the braking or stopping of the governor cable, through excess speed, automatically operates the elevator brake cable.
The features of the invention are more fully set forth in the description of the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, wherein:
Figure 1 is an elevation of an elevator showing the herein described safety governor applied thereto.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 14, 1919.
Serial No. 159,211.
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view showing the elevator brake mechanism.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail section on line 33 of Fig. 1. r
Fig. 4- is an enlarged detail section on line 1-4 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged front elevation of the safety governor.
Fig. 6 is a section on line 6-6 of Fig. 7, showing the toggle broken and the lock arms in rope engaging position.
ig. is an enlarged side elevation of the governor partly broken.
Fig. 8 is a detailed section on line 8-8 of Fig. 5.
For convenient illustration, I have shown the outline merely of a freight elevator, comprising the upright members 1, on each side of the shaft elevator floor 2, shaft rails 3. and elevator shoes 4: engaging the rails 3, the emergency brake comprising on each side of the elevator the pivoted bell crank levers 5 having at their outer ends brake shoes 6 positioned upon opposite sides of the rail 3. and arranged to clamp upon this rail under speeds which bring the governor into emergency function. The mechanism for operating the bell crank levers 5 will be later described.
At the upper end of the elevator shaft is a governor supporting bracket 7 having bearing posts 8, in which is journaled a shaft 9 carrying a governor sheave or wheel 10, having the grooved peripheryfor the cable 11. This is an endless cable in the suspend ed loop of which is a weight 12 havingthe sheave 13 riding in the loop end of the cable, and preferably this weight is tracked or guided by having guide-ways 14: engaging a track or guide 15 extended in the shaft, appropriately supported in the shaft by means of a bracket 16 (see Fig. 2). The details of the governor mechanism operated by this wheel 10- will be later described.
The bell crank levers 5 are operated by a cable 17 mounted on the bottom of the elevator and a clamping device 18 is provided, (see Figs. 3 and 4:), for attaching both the governor cable 11 and the brake operating cable 17 to the elevator, by clamping bolts 19, the clamp 18 being carried by the traveling cable 11, the lower end of this clam 18, and the cables 11, 17, passing rim-A through the collar 20, fixed to the elevator. The lower end of the clamp member 18 has a detent 21, and the collar 20 has a sleeve 22 in which is a spring actuated latch 23 for engaging and disengaging the detent. iVhen the elevator is ascending, the collar 20 will engage under the head portion of the member 18, which is of a width sufficient to extend over the said collar thereby causing the elevator to travel in unison with the cable 11, the brake operating cable 17 being no:- mally stationary relative to the elevator; and when the elevator descends under normal conditions, the detent and latch will hold the cable 11 and the elevator in unison travel, while under abnormal conditions of descent, where danger speed is attained, the automatic mechanism stops the cable 11 and holds it rigidly against motion so that the elevator weight will release the latch 23 from detent 21, and the upper end of the brake cable 17 being held stationary by its attachment to the cable -11 through the clamp member 18, will draw the cable 17 into motion actuating the bell crank levers 5 as follows:
The cable 17, from the clamp piece 18, passes downwardly to the floor of the elevator, around the sheave 24- on the car, thence passing under the car over sheave 25 to a drum 27 on shaft 28 extending transversely on the under side of the car and mounted in suitable bearings the opposite ends of the shaft having the right and left screw threaded portions 30, which engage into the wedge blocks 31, carrying antifrictional rollers These bell crank levers 5 are pivoted at 33, their inner ends 34 lying upon opposite sides of the wedge blocks and providing the camming surfaces 35 which are engaged by the rollers of the wedge blocks to move the arms inwardly or outwardly to clamp the brake shoes 6 upon the rails 3 when the governor cable 11 is locked against motion.
' This elevator emergency brake mechanism actuated by the cable 17 is of standard construction, which, unitarily considered, may be regarded as an elemental exponent of the combination constituting my invention.
Returning now to the governor mechanism, (Figs. 5, 6, 7 and 8), which is automatically operated by predetermined speed i to lock the cable 11, an elongated bearing 36 is formed for the extended governor wheel shaft 9, on the inner end of which is the beveled. gear 37 meshing with the beveled gear 38, fixed to the governor shaft 39, on
the upper end of which is suspended the conventional weighted governor arms 40, carrying the suspended governor sleeve 41 rotatively on the shaft 39, there being a plurality oflugs or actuating members 42 at the lower end of the sleeves 41, which first actuate the power switch and subsequently break the toggle joint of the cable brake after the switch is thrown. These lugs have cam upper surfaces to produce a more positive lifting action against the toggle joint during the rotation of the governor sleeve. The switch mechanism 14 is operated by a switch throwing arm 15 having a pin 46 projected in the orbit of rotation of the operating lugs 41-2 on the sleeve 41; when the speed of the governor raises the sleeve to a predetermined point, the lug, first striking the pin 46, will throw the switch arm and actuate the switch to shut off the power through appropriate electrical connections, the detail of which need not be described.
In addition to this automatic power cutout, and in order to mechanically and positively lock the cable 11 against motion, I provide the following instrumentalities which coact with the governor wheel 10 and the cable 11. On opposite sides of the governor wheel are pivoted the upright lock arms 47, the upper ends of which are connected by toggle links 4l84-9, the central connecting pin of which has an anvil member 50 projected laterally directly in the orbit of rotation of the cam lugs 1-2, of the governor sleeve, and positioned at a slightly higher location than that of the switch operating lever pin 16. Through the extremities of these arms 47 passes the rod 52 carrying heavy coil springs 53 externally and which normally and forcibly press the arms toward one another when the joint of the toggle member is alined, and when the toggle is broken upwardly by the lugs 42. the arnis are thrown forcibly together as shown in Fig. 6, for clamping the cable 11, and locking the wheel 10.
It will be understood that this (onstitutes a safety mechanism and the toggle joint its member to be tripped by a governor member. The governor member has a fixed radius and is movable in alinement with the toggle joint to be broken.
The specific brake and lock mechanism comprises a series of lugs 54 on the lateral margins of the wheel 10,the arms 47 having the lateral lugs 55 for interlocking the lugs '54; that is, when the to 'le is broken, the
The operation, briefly, is that at the pre- I determined danger speed the governor sleeve is raised to first operate the switch and then to break the toggle joint so that the brake projections 56 will first frictionally engage tit the cable 11 with great force checking the rotation of the wheel and then the lugs 54- and 55 will interlock to positively hold the wheel and cable against rotation. The car will then automatically detach from the cable clamp member 18, unwinding the brake cable 17 from its drum t9 automatically actuate the brakes 6, which clamp upon the rail 3 of the elevator shaft and so arrest the motion of the car in the shaft and hold it stationary.
The tripping of the toggle, or breaking the joint is efiected by the driving or harm mering action of the cam lugs 42 against the toggle joint anvil member 50, and so has the full driving force incident to the momentum of the governor rotation, and hits the toggle joint roller forceful blows in an upward direction. In other words, the toggle trip is operated by a blow or series of blows, and the vertical movement of the sleeve places the hammer lug in position for breaking the toggle joint.
