Be it known that I, lVILLAM F. MoCAn'rY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Defiance, in the county of Defiance `and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Means for Lubricating Machine- Tools, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to the lubrication of machine tools such, for instance, as shown and described in the application for Letters Patent of the United States for a horizontal boring, drilling, milling and tapping machine, Serial No. 240,655, filed by me on June 18, 1918.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved means for lubricating the bearings, gears, clutches and other parts contained in the speed and feed boxes of a machine tool of the type referred to and whereby a continuous and edective lubrication of the parts is. insured while the machine is running and without requiring any attention on the part of the attendant in charge of the machine. Another object is to permit of using the lubricant over and over again thus reducing the waste of the lubricant to a minimum. Another obj ect is to permit the use of completely closed feed and speed boxes to prevent the entry of dust and other foreign substances into the boxes and to prevent the attendant from becoming entangled in the moving parts of the speed and feed gearings.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically po-inted out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.
Figure 1 is a front elevation partly in section of the speed and feed boxes of a machine tool provided with the improved lubricating means, parts being shown in section; and
Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same approximately on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1 and with the parts broken out.
The means for lubricating machine tools are shown applied to the speed box 10 and the feed box 11 of the horizontal boring, 55 drilling, milling and tapping machine above vreferred to. The speed box 10 contains a speed gearing 12 driven from the main shaft 14C of the machine, and the feed box 11 contains a feed gearing 15, thesaid gearings 12 and 15 serving to rotate the drill spindle of the machine and to feed the said drill spindie lengthwise, as more fully explained in the application above referred to. The speed and feed boxes 10 and 11 are completely 65 closedY and their lower portions form oil wells 20 land 21 iilled with oil and connected with each other by a pipe 22 to maintain the oil at the same level in both oil wells 2O and 21. By reference to the drawings, it will be noticed that the lower portions of the gearings 12 and 15 run in the oil contained in the oil wells 20 and 21.
In order `to circulate the oil and lubricate the upper portions of the feed gearing 15 in the feed box 11 use is made of a pump 30 preferably of the rotary type, and driven by suitable gearing 81 from the main shaft le, as shown in the drawings. The pump 30 is provided with a suction pipe 32 which 80 extends into the oil contained in the oil well 20 and the pump is provided with a discharge pipe 33 extending upward through a top cover 3i of the feed box 10 to then connect by a coupling 35 with a manifold 36 85 in the form. of a pipe arranged in the top portion ofthe speed box 11. The manifold 36 is provided with a series of delivery pipes 40 for delivering the oil to the various parts of the gearing 15 and arranged in the upper 90 portion of the feed box 11.
It will be noticed that when the machine is running the pump 30 is actuated and pumps the oil from the oil well 2O into the manifold 36 within the upper portion of the 95 feed box 11, the oil passing from the manifold by way of the delivery pipes 40 to the parts of the feed gearing 15 to be lubricated and arranged in the upper portion of the feed box 11. It will be noticed that the oil from the upper portion of the feed gearing 15 flows back into the oil well 21 from which the oil can flow by way' of the pipe 22 back into the oil well 20 to lubricate the speed gearing 12 therein and to allow the pump 30 105 to pump the oil to the manifold 36 for distribution in the upper portion of the feed box 11. A gage 50 is arranged in front 0f the speed box l0 and is connected with the oil well 2O thereof to indicate the level of the oil in the oil wells.
From the foregoing it will be seen that a continuous and effective lubricating of the parts in the` boxes 10 and 1l is insured while the machine is running and without requiring any attention from the attendant of the machine. It will also be noticed that the lubricant is used over and over again thus reducing the waste of the lubricant to a minimum. The attendant in charge of the machine can readily see at a glance whether the oil wells 20 and 21 need replenishing with oil or not. By the arrangement described' the boxes can be kept completely closed to prevent dust and other extraneous matter from passing into the boxes at the same time protecting the attendant from injury by the running parts of the speed and feed gearings l2 and 15 mounted in the said boxes.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
l. In a means for lubricating machine tools, the combination of closed feed and speed boxes arranged one alongside the other and each having its lower portion forming an oil well, a connection between the said lower box portions to maintain the oil in the said wells at approximately the same level, the parts to be lubricated and arranged in each of the said lower box portionsextending into the oil in the oil wells, an oil pump in one of the said boxes and having a suction pipe and a delivery pipe, the suction pipe extending into the oil well of the box in which the pump is located, and
an oilV distributing means connected with the said delviery pipe and arranged in the upper portion of the other box to discharge the oil into this box and onto the parts to be lubricated, the oil in its return flow passing into the oil well in this box.
2. In a means for lubricating machine tools, the combination of vclosed feed and speed boxes arranged one alongside the other and each having its lower portion forming an oil well, a connection between the said lower box portions to maintain the oil in the said wells at approximately the same level, the parts to be lubricated and arranged lin each of the said lower box portions extending` into the oil in the oil wells, an oil pump in one of the'said boxes and having a suction pipe and a delivery pipe, the suction pipe extending into the oil well of the box in which the pump is located, and an oil distributing means connected with the said delivery pipe and arranged in the upper portion of the other box, the said dis tributing means being in the form of a hori- Zontally disposed manifold provided with delivery pipes for delivering the oil onto the parts to be lubricated in the upper portion of this box, the oil in its return iow passing into the oil well in this box.
` 3. In a means for lubricating machine tools, the combination of a closed speed box containing a main shaft and speed changing gearing, a closed feed box containing a feed gearing, the said boxes being arranged one alongside the other and each having its lower portion forming an oil well filled with oil in which run the lower portions of the said gearings, a pipe connecting the said lower box portions with eachother to allow the oil to pass from one oil well to the other to maintain the oil at the same level in both boxes, a pump mounted in the said speed box and having a suction pipe and a discharge pipe, the suction pipe extending into the oil well ofthe speed box and the said discharge pipe leading to the upper portion of the said feed box, driving means connecting the said pump with the said main shaft, a manifold in the upper portion of the said feed box and connected with the said discharge pipe, and distributing pipes leading from the manifold to the parts to be lubricated in the upper portion of the feed box.
4L. In a means for lubricating machine tools, the combination of closed feed and speed boxes arranged, one alongside the other and each having its lower portion forming an oil well, a connection between the said lower box portions to maintain the oil in the said wells at approximately the same level, the parts to be lubricated and arranged in each of the said lower box portions extending into the oil in the oil wells, an oil pump in one of the said boxes and having a suction pipe anda deliveryV pipe, the suction pipe extending into the oil well of the box in which the pump is located, an oil distributing means connected with the said delivery pipe and arranged in the upper portion of the other box to discharge the oilV into this box and onto the parts to be lubricated, the oil in its return flow passing into the oil well in this box, and a gage connected with the oil well of the speed box to indicate the level of the oil therein.
