INVENTOR WITNESSES W JM BY W ATTORNEY THOMAS FOX, 0F BELFAST, IRELAND.
CIGARETTE-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 14, 1919.
Application led J'uly 15, 1918. Serial No. 244,968.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS Fox, a subject of the King of England, residing at Belfast, Ireland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigarette-Holders, of 'which the following is a specification.
This inventionA relates to tobacco, and more especially to a cigar and cigarette holder; and the object of the same is t0 insert a strainer or filter in the cigarette holder between the mouth piece and the cavity for receiving the cigarette. It is well known that .the tobacco used in most cigarettes contains lmore or less of the oils which are objectionable and injurious to the human system, and
this will be proven if the smoker blows some of the smokey through a handkerchief. I
propose to u se a filter or cleanser composed of linen, mounted within the cigarette holder so that the smoke as drawn into the mouth must pass through the same and therefore be' cleansed or filtered before it reaches the -mouth of the smoker.
Details will be set forth in the following specification, and attention is invited to the drawings wherein y y ry Figure l is a central longitudinal sectional view of this device complete,
VFigs 2 and 3 are cross sections on the lines 2 2 and 3 3 respectively of Fig. 1,
Fig. 4 is an" enlarged elevation ofthe filter,-
and
Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional detail thereof.
'The mouth piece is designated by the numeral l, and at its front end it is bored out to produce a cavity 2. The holder vis indicated by the numeral 3, its front end having a cavity 4 for the cigarette. Its rear end is -reduced externally as shown, so as to pass into the cayity 2,`or in other words the axes.
' two diskof fabric such as linen,
parts are telescopically connected. The bore 5 runs through both parts .along their While `'I describe this device asap-4 plicable to aI cigarette holder, obviously it might be used on a cigar. holderor possibly' on the stem 'of a pipe, butthe important feature is that .the artlcle is n two parts telescoped together so that my improved tilter .or strainer may be used between them. In Fig. 5 the numeral lO'designates a and around its edge is a band 11 of mucilage which isperor thousand to smokers and they are intended for insertion between the two elements of thecigarette holder as indicated by the point l2 in Fig. 1 and as best seen in Fig. 2. For lthis purposethe two parts of the holder are drawn apart, the old disk slipped out and the cavity of the mouth 'piece washed, a new disk inserted, andthe reduced inner end of the holder 3 shoved into the front portion ofthe mouth piece until the ,disk reaches the position indicated by the numeral 12 in Fig. l. Thereafter when the user sucks on the mouth piece smoke is drawnfrom the cigarette or cigar along the bore 5, and it must of necessity pass through the linen or fabric l0 of the strainer. The heat and ,moisture softens the band l1 of mucilage, so that it is impossible for anything to get around the edge of the disk, even if the two parts of the device should slipa little out of their proper position as shown in Fig, 1. The oil of tobacco and other injurious andcolorable substances which smoke contains are thus taken up by the fabric filter and retained, 'being strained out of the smoke so 'that they do not reach the mouth of the user.
The foregoing description and the drawings have reference to' what may be considered the preferred, or approved, form of my invention. It' is to be understood that I Amay make such changes in constructiony and arrangement and combination of parts, materials, dimensions, et cetera, as may prove expedient .and fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus fully described my tion, what I claim as new and desire to secure-by Letters Patent, is :-v
As a new article of` manufacture, the
.herein described smoke filter consisting of a disk of fabric of a size to be inserted in invena holder for cigarettes and the like, and A
