Specification of Letters Patent.
KILN AND SIMILAR STRUCTURE.
Patented Jan. '7, 1919.
Application filed November 11, 1916. Serial No. 130,800.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HALVER R. STRAIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Adel, in the county of Dallas and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Kilns and Similar Structures, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to secure efliciency and durability in kilns and similar structures by simple and economical means.
More particularly, it is my object to provide in a kiln a composite wall having a resilient and heat insulating packing between inner and outer shells, said arrangement being adapted to compensate for the unequal expansion and contraction of said shells.
These and other objects will more fully hereinafter appear.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a composite view, the part at the left showing a vertical section of a portion of the kiln, while forcing band 20 at its upper margin to support the thrust of the arched crown 13. The frame of the outer shell 11 is constructed of hollow building tile 21, which are formed and arranged to receive vertical and horizontal reinforcing rods embedded in grouting material, such as concrete, which elements, when united as hereinafter described, constltute a rigid and durable unitary structure. As shown, these hollow tile have four cells and are arranged vertically end-on-end in staggered relation, so that the cells therein register and form vertical openings extendingfrom the bottom of the shell 11 to the top thereof. A reinforcing rod 22 is placed within each of these openings and concrete 23, or the like, is poured therein, the rod 22 being used as an agitator to settle said concrete. Transverse grooves 24 in the upper ends of the tile 21 form horizontal recesses in which reinforcing rods 25 are placed. At opposite sides of the doorways 14, these rods are secured to keepers 26 attached to the doorframe 15. Said rods are preferably bent to form hooks 27 (Fig. 2)
the part at the right of said view illustrates in elevation a portion of the inner shell and a fragment of the outer shell, the former being brokenaway to show the connections between several horizontal reinforcing rods and one of the door frames; Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, is a detail view showing a portion of the outer reinforcing wall;. Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3; and Fig. 5 is a plan view of a hollow buildin tile employed to make up the permanent form for the outer reinforced shell. v i
Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that my improved kiln consists of a composite wall A comprising an inner shell 10, a reinforced outer shell 11 and intermediate heat insulating packing 12 which is composed of resillent and loose material, such as mineral wool or cinders. A crown 13 is carried upon the inner shell 10. Doorways 14 penetrate the composite wall and are supplied with metal doorframes 15. Each doorframe consists of an arched member 16 formed with a flange 17 overlapping the outer shell 11 and provided with a sill 18 and stay-rods 19. The inner shell 10 is constructed of brick in the usual manner, but is thinner than the ordinary kiln wall.
56 Said inner shell 10 is supplied with a reinwhich engage said keepers. The spaces between the building tile 21 and the members 16 of the doorframes 15, which contain the hooks 27 and keepers 26, are filled with conorete after said hooks have been secured in said keepers. I
The outer shell 11 extends considerably above the inner shell 10. and the loose insulating packing 12 is carried above said inner shell and about the margin of the crown 13. A seal or covering 28, consisting. of fire clay, or other suitable fireproof material, is placed over the. insulating packing 12 and is adapted to expand or contract without disintegrating. thereby excluding moisture from the packing 12. To protect this cover ing 28, I provide a deck 29 of brick, or other fireproof material, which is set upon an incline and adapted to drain water from the top of the kiln.
The width of the space between the shells 10 and 11 is determined with respect to the compressibility of the packing therein, so that it may be of suflicient thickness to compensate for the expansion of the inner shell.
It will be noted that this loose packing 12 not only insulates and permits the expansion of the inner shell 10, but also presses inwardly against said shell and follows it while assuming normal dimensions when contracting, thereby minimizing the racking of said inner shell due to changes in tem-- perature. I I I I I Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect .byLetters Patent, is:

forcement for'thetopof the inner shell, and
