Specification of Letters'latent.
Application filed June 26, 1917. Serial No. 176,998.
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, ALoYsIos WAY- orrorr, a subject of the Emperor of Hun-' gary, and a resident of the county of Bronx, city and State of New York,-have invented a certain new and useful Drafting Instrument, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates toa new and improved drafting instrument, and more par ticularly to an instrument for drawing elli'pses or ovals.
The objects of my invention are to produce an instrument of low cost, and one which may be readily adjusted to make ellipses or ovals of different sizes.
These and further objects will more fully appear in the following specification and accompanying drawings considered together or separately.
In carrying out my invention, I provide a spindle 1 having a cylindrical portion 2 at its center, and non-cylindrical portions 3, and 4,-0ne on each side of the central portion. The upper extremity of the spindle is rotatable relatively to the spindle and removable therefrom. The lower extremity of the spindle is tapered to form a needle 6 by means of which the instrument iswcaused to engage the paper. Adjustably carried on the portion 4 of the spindle is a needle point 7 pivoted in a bracket 8.
Adjustably carried on the cylindrical part of the spindle is an abutment 9 secured in place b a set screw. A tube 10 is loosely mounted on the cylindrical part of the spindle and is supported in position by the abutment 9. Pivoted to the tube 10 are two arms 11 and 12. These arms are composed of parallel strips, each provided with a longitudinal slot 11. 12 The ends of the arms are joined by a bar 13 which acts in the same manner as a parallel ruler. A standand 14 is carried between the plates forming the arms 11 and 12. The standard is provided with trunnions, each of which carries blocks 15 slidable in the slots 11 and 12 The bar and the standard 14 is each provided with a recess in which is pivoted a bearing 13 and-nut 14 respectively. Engaging the nuts is a) screw 16 held against longitudinal movement in the bearing 13 and with its threaded portion engaging the nut 14 on the standard. When the screw is rotated by means of its milled head, the standard 14 will be moved toward or away from the bar 13.
Adjustably carried on the lower endof the standard 14 is a fitting 17, the lower portion of which is slotted, and two arms 18, 18 are pivoted at separate points within the slot. The lowermost arm 18 is provided with a screw-threaded extension 19 which carries a milled edge nut 20, which is adapted to engage the lower circular end 21 of the fitting. The opposite ends of the arms 18, 18 are pivoted to a member 22 in such a manner as to cause the member to act in the same manner as a parallel ruler. Adjustably carried by the member 22 is a marking point 23 which maybe a pen, pencil, scriber or the like.
' Removably and adjustably carried onv the non-circular part 3 of the spindle is an. elliptical templet 24 and adapted to engage with the edge of. said templet is an arm 25 carried by the arm 11 which is thereby held in a certain inclined position relatively to the standard. This inclined osition will vary accordingly as the arm 25 engages a point on the edge of the templet, more or less re-' moved from the axial line of the standard which is also the center of the templet, provided the latter is a symmetrical figure.
. I desire to have it understood that the templet may be of shapes other than elliptical. as for example oval.
The operation is as follows:
' When it is desired to produce an ellipse, an elliptical templet is placed in position on the part 3 of the standardand the needle point is so adjusted that its lower extremity is on a level with the point of the needle 6 and to some distance to one side thereof. The point 7 must be positioned relatively to the point 6 and the templet 21, so that the points 6 and 7 may rest on a line forming the long diameter of the ellipse to be inscribed. 4
The line of the long diameter is now drawn on the paper and bisected. The point G'is placed at the center of the line, and the point 7 on the line at one side thereof, with the standard perpendicular to the surface of the paper. The arms 11 and 12are swung around until they are in line with the-line on the paper. The screw 16 is now manipulated tobringjhe penpointto oneend of the line. The templet is now positioned upon the part 3 of the spindle with one of its longest radii resting against the arm 25..
In order that the paper my not be soiled by inkarunning from the pen, the latter will be raised, by hand, slightly above the paper during the above described adjustment.
