Description

H. STRATER, Jr.
lmprovement in Pull-Cocks.
N0. m1292069. Patented July i6, 1872.
@am Q5-M604 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN PULL-COCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 129,069, dated July 16, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMAN STRATER, Jr., of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Pull-Cock; and I dohereby declare that the following, taken in connection with the drawing which accompanies and forms part of this specifica-tion, is a description of my invention sufficient to enable those skilled in the art to practice it.
The invention relates to the construction of that class of faucets known as pull-cocks, used particularly with beer-pumps or beer-dispensin g apparatus, the faucet having a down-turned outlet and a horizontal plug-valve, and the opposite ends of the valve being fastened to two branches of a central handle, which handle stands in vertical position when the faucet is closed, and being drawn down toward a horizontal position to open the faucet. In my invention I make the branches in one piece with the handle or handle-shank, and form each with a rectangular slot, which slips over a square end on the corresponding` end of the valve-plug, each branch also having a circular boss or projection, over which the circular flange of a cap extends, a screw extending from the center of the cap and screwing axially into the plug. My invention consists in a pull-cock having the pull-lever and valve or plug thus connected.
The drawing represents a pull-cock embodying my invention.
A shows a front and sectional elevation of the cock; B is a side view of it, the nearest plug-cap being removed. O is a view of the pull-handle or lever.
a denotes the faucet-tube, having the screwthreaded inlet end b and the eduction-tube c. d denotes the plu'g, extending horizontally through the body or valve-seat e. Each end of the plug extends beyond the body e, and has a square and projecting end, f2 g denotes the handle'7 having a shank, h, from which extend, in opposite directions, the two branches or arms fi k. Each of these arms is made at its end with a rectangular slot, l, tting over one of the ends f, the handle, by means of these slots, being slipped upon or from the ends f of the valve. Each arm also has the circular projection or boss m, and when the handle is slipped upon the plug a cap, a, is
screwed over each of these heads, each cap having a flange, o, fitting over the projection m, and a center-screw, p, which enters an axial nut-thread in the plug. By turning the caps up the pull is securely fastened to the plug, while by starting them back a short distance the handle may be slipped from position.
Generally the plug and valve-case are made with shoulders or stops for limiting the movement of the plug, but in this one I dispense with these shoulders, which, from their nearness to the center of rotation, are exposed to great strain, and soon wear, and apply to the handle a tail-piece, q, which, when the cock is opened, strikes the tube a and arrests the movement of the valve-plug, 'the shank, or a projection therefrom, being also so formed that when the handle is turned down to open the cock it strikes the tube and arrests further movement of the valve.
By making the cock as shown the parts are not only very simple in construction and in their connection, but the pull-lever or handle may be very readily and quickly applied to or removed from the cock without removing or disturbing the plug. The branches z' may be vmade with circular heads for covering the opposite ends of the plug, in which case a flange extends inward from each head, saidflange having an opening or slot to permit the flange to slip laterally over and embrace the end of the plug, a screw being inserted through each head into the plug. I prefer, however, the specific construction shown.
I claim- 1. The pull-cock having the arms or branches i k of the handle formed with slots which extend over the opposite ends of the valveplug, substantially as shown and described.
2. Also, in combination with the slotted branches i' k, the bosses m, and the ilanged cap o extending over said bosses, substantially as shown and described.
3. Also, the pull-cock handle, made with direct provision for limiting the extent of movement of the plug, substantially as shown and described.
