Description

L. El STiLWELL.
Improvement in Harvester-Cutters.
No. 129,068. Patented July 16', 1872.
Wlllv e ss es. l'wyeiz/Z.
EITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN HARVESTER-CUTTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 129,068, dated July 16, 1872.
To all whom t 'may concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIS E. STILWELL, of 1ranklinville, in the county of Uattaraugus and State oi' New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sickle-Bars; and-I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specication, in which- Figure l is a plan View; Fig. 2, a transverse section.
Like letters in both gures indicate like parts.
rIhe object of this invention is to prevent the cutter-bar from vibrating or springing from of the drawing `the cut, so that it will cut the grain clean without whipping it off; and the invention consists in constructing and combining the 1in gers with the cutter-bar and keeper, attached to the bar of the lingers, in such a manner as will prevent the dust from interfering with a free operation of the cutter-bar, as will be hereinafter more fully explained. A
A is the cutter-bar, having a strap, a, attached to its upper side, the strap being narrower than the bar, so as to form a flange, b I), on each side. The cutters B are attached to the top of the strap, being riveted through it and the bar. C are the n gers, having their rear ends made to shoulder onto bar D, and attached thereto as ordinarily, so that the cutter-bar proper will come liush with the surface of bar D, and hence admit of the keeperE, which is attached to the top of bar D, to lap squarely over the flange b of the cutter-bar, the fingers having ledger-plates c projecting over the opposite ange b, thus forming a recess in each finger to receive and admit ofthe cutter-bar working freely therein without the liability/ of dust or dirt impedin g its operation; and, as will be seen, the keeper and ledgerplates hold the cutter-bar down, so that it caunot vibrate or spring at any point along its cutting-line. This being the case, the cutterbar will run with less power, cutting the grain clean without whippin g it off or making a dragging-eut.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The cutter-bar A provided with strap a, so as to form a tongue or iange, b, on each side thereof, in combination with the fingers C having their rear ends constructed to shoulder onto bar D, in connection with the ledger-plates o and the continuous keeper E, all constructed and arranged in the manner and for the purpose as herein shown and set forth.
As evidence that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two witnesses.
LEWIS E. STILWELL. [L. s.]
