CHARLES A. MOORE, or sT. PAUL, MINNESOTA.
COMBINED TRAP AND SEAL.
Specication of Letters Patent. Patented J an, 7, 1919,
Application filed March 23, 1914, Serial No.', 8?6,779. Renewed May 18, 1918. Serial No.` 235,394.
To all @hom t may concern:
B e 1t known that I, CHARLES A. Moom:, a citizen of the United States, residing at f St. Paulin the county of Ramsey and State the drain in summer time without admitting warm air.
In the accompanying drawing forming .'part of this specification, `Figure 1 is a detail in section taken on the line X- X, Fig. 3, and showing my invention in use on' a n portionof a refrigerator car, the combined trap and seal being illustrated inopen position; Fig. 2 is a View similar/to Fig. 1 showing the combined trap and seal closed, and Fig. 3 is another detail partly in section taken on the line Y -Y, Flg. 2, and looking at the side of the car and at the front of the combined trap and seal.
` In the drawing A indicates a detail'of a refrigerator car, 2 representing a portion of the side wall, '3 a portion of the oor and 4. a sill supporting the Hoor and side wall.l
5 represents va ortion of the drain pipe which 1s adapted) to'lead down from an ice bunker and.l 6 represents a drain pipe passing downwardly through and projecting below the sill It of the car, the upper end of said pipe 6 communicating with the interior of the car and receiving the lower end of drain pipe 5, whereby the drain 6 is adapted to conduct any drip'or water from the drain pipeand floor of the car to the outer atmosphere. Mounted vupon the sill 4 by a hin ed connection 7 is a frame receptacle 8 w ich is open at its upper end and closed at its lower end.. This receptacle has a metal llning formln a water tight cup 9 which extends overt e rim of the receptacle and down lover its front wall, being nailed or otherwlse secured `in place. In closed condition'the receptacle lis swung up with its tightly pressing against a surface plate v1.0 whlch is nailed or otherwise secured to 'end of said drain pipe the lower surface of the sill 4., In this posi? tion the drain 6 is sealed substantiallyfromthe'outer atmosphere by the receptacle that is when no water in liquid or frozen condition is in the receptacle. The free or front side of the receptacle is provided with a clasp 11 which is secured thereto by means of the bolt 12, said clasp being formed with aforwardly projecting arm 13, which can be used vas a handle to raisel or lower the receptacle.
This arm is bifurcated andn straddle's a depending support 14 whicli is secured to the -sill 4 by the bolts 15. This. support has a pair of openings 16 'and 17 through which a pin 18 havingtwo spring, arms such as 19 is adapted to be passed to engage the arm 13 between them and hold the receptacle in either open or closed position. One of the arms 19 of thepin 18 is crimped to prevent it from becoming unintentionally detached from locking posltion when in use. A chain 21 secured to the sill and the lock pin 18 serves to prevent the pin from being lost when the receptacle is allowed to hang in unsupported position below the drain. In use when it is desired to seal the drain 6, it is swung up against the plate 10 and locked by the pin passing through the opening 16. When in use to allow water passing downwardly through the drain 6 and prevent air from entering the cooling chamber, the re-4 ceptacle is locked in' lowered position as illustrated in Fig. 1V by inserting the pin through the opening 17 in the support 14. When it is desired to clean the drain the pin is re-v moved from the support and the drain swung downwardly below the car.
In accordance with the patent have described the principles'of operation of only illustrative and Ithat the invention can be carried out by other means and applied to uses other than those above set forth within the scope of the following claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is l. In combination with a drain pipe and its support, a receptacle into which the lower rojects, said receptacle being hinged to said) support and adapted to swin upwardly against its lower surface to sea said drain pipe and to be swung Astatues I down 'into a position t0 form a Water trap around said drain pipe and means for holding said receptacle in either closed position againstsaid support or in said lowered position. 4
2. In combination with a support having a drain pipe extending below the same, a receptacle hinged to said support and adapted to swing upwardly against said support to yseal `said drain pipe, to be moved down into lowered position to form a trap surrounding the lower end of said drain pipe or to swing backwardly entirely 'free of the drain pipe, a locking element projecting from the free side of said pipe, a member extending downwardly from' said support provided with superimposed openings and a lock pin adapted to be inserted through said openings to engage said locking element to hold said receptacle in either closed position to seal said drain pipe when said receptacle is empty or in open position to form a water trap.
3. In combination with a drain duct and a support adjacent to said duct, a receptacle into which the lower ond of said duct projects, said receptacle being movably supported to close against said support and seal said duct or to assume a position -forming a liquid trap for said duct.
.In testimony whereof I have signed my
