CHARLES A. SWANSON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SGREW-GAP LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. '7, 1919.
Application filed February 2, 1917. Serial No. 146,255.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLns A. .SWANsoN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Screw-Cap Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in screw cap locks, and has for its object the production of a device of this character designed for use especially in connection with oil cup caps to prevent accidental release of the screw caps thereof.
A further object is the production of a locking device, as mentioned, which will be of extremely simple construction, one which may be readily and easily applied, and one which will. be highly eflicient in use.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
With these objects in view, the invention consists in the combinations and arrange ments of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a screw cap locking device embodying the invention,
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof,
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of Fig. 2,
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 2, showing another side of the device,
Fig. 5 is a top plan view of Fig. 4:, and
Fig. 6 is a sectional elevation showing the device applied for use in connection with an oil cup.
The preferred form of construction, as illustrated in the drawings, comprises a circular thin flat disk 1 which is adapted, when in use, for insertion between the cap 2 and the oil cup or other element 2 to which the cap is applied.
The member 1 is formed of metal and is provided in the peripheral portion thereof with diametrical radially extending slits 3. The edge portions 4 and 5 of the slits 3 are bent or offset oppositely, so as to form oppositely projecting engaging teeth, said teeth projecting, as seen, in opposite directions from the plane of the member 1, as clearly shown in Figs. 1, 2, 4 and 6.
With this arrangement, when the device is employed, as seen in Fi 6, upon screwing down of the cap 2, the edge portions 4; and 5 will yield under the pressure of said cap and the resiliency of said portions l and 5 will cause said portions to securely engage against the adjacent surfaces of the cap 2 and cup 2, thus serving to prevent accidental unscrewing of the cap. The disposition of the portions 4 and,,5 is such, as will be seen, as to permit of ready screwing of the cap to position, said portions being effective in preventing unscrewing of the cap. Vith this arrangement, the caps of oil cups on machines which are subjected to throbbing or vibration, will be effectively prevented from accidental releasing, such as is the case at present, where no provision is made to prevent unscrewing.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail. myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
The combination of an oil cup; a cap threaded on said cup over the end thereof; means for locking said cap against retrograde rotation, comprising a flat circularly imperforate disk arranged loosely in and snugly fitting the cap, said disk being interposed between the top of the cap and the adj acent end surface of the cup, said disk having a plurality of spaced radial slits in the peripheral portion thereof, the edges of each slit being oppositely offset for engagement with the adjacent surfaces of the cap and cup, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES A. SWANSON.
