PATENT summon.
To all whom a may concern Be it known that I, ALFRED SM LLWOOD, a subject of the Kingdom of Great Britain, residing at 4:2 Hargrave Park, Highgate, London, N., in the county of Middlesex, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Furnaces, of which the folowingis a specification.
This invention comprises certain improvements in or relating to furnaces, and is particularly applicable to furnaces for the heating of billets, or other articles .of a like character. The present invention provides a particularly simple and efficient mode of and means for displacing or advancing the billets within the heating chamber so that they may be introduced'at one extremity, caused to traverse the length of the heating chamber, and removed from the other extremity.
The present invention relates to mechanism for displacing or advancing articles within a heating chamber, of the type in which the articles are advanced or displaced upon supporting means adapted to elevate and lower the goods, and also to displace or advance the goods horizontally, and in which the mechanism for elevating and lowering said supporting means also effects the horizontal displacement of the supporting means in an action according to which said supporting means are raised by said elevating and lowering mechanism, then advanced or displaced horizontally by the same mechanism, and then still by the same mechanism lowered in their displaced or advanced condition. According to the present invention, in this type of mechanism the supporting means are adapted to be lowered into openings adapted to contain cooling liquid, and when the bars are in their lowered positions they are thereby protected from the heat of the furnace chamber. The said supporting means may furthermore be adapted to be cooled internally, for which purposethey are hollow and adapted to have cooling liquid circulated through them.
In order that this invention may be clearly understood and readily carried into practice, reference may be had to the appended explanatory two sheets of drawings, upon which Figure l is a sectional planof a furnace according to the present invention.

The furnace chamber a has longitudinal openings b in its base; these openings 6 are adapted to accommodate the bars 0 by which the billets (Z or other goods are displaced. The bars 0 extend beyond the extremities of the furnace chamber at both ends so that the goods can be placed upon them at one extremitypf the furnace outside of the heating chamber thereofQand removed therefroni at, the other end of the furnace outside of the heating chamber thereof; At positions at or near to their ends, conveniently in the @vicinities of the ends of the furnace chamber, said bars 0 are furnished with eccentric straps 6. These eccentric straps are bolted or otherwise secured to the bars, and they are adapted to cooperate with eccentrics f mounted upon transverse shafts 9, one of which is pro vided at each extremity of the furnace. Each transverse shaft 9 carries two eccentries f, one for each bar, and the said transverse shafts g also each carry a central worm wheel it which meshes with a worm provided upon a vertical shaft 2', which last-mentioned shaft 2' carries a bevel wheel y.
