Specification o Letters Patent.

Application tiled. August $21, 1917. Serial No. 187,371.
,To all whom t may conccm l 'i l lie it know/n that We, WILLIAM H. Llaman and Grenen', W. LnIMAN citizens ofthe United States, andresidents of Newark, in
the county of Esseihandtate of New J ersey, have in ented a new and useful linprovement i Rotary Pumps, of which the following isla speoiiioation. j
ln rotary pumps-Where aneccentrically mounted rotary diskis located Within the pyl'indrical chamber arid in which spring- `:pressed pistons slide radially in said rotary dish, the pistons frequently work hard and cramp because; of their necessarily short all oithesel faults, the first aultbeingob-- viatrld'by mounting' the pistons tangentielly to give them an extended bearing inthe dish; the4 second fault being obviated by providiia y means whereby any piston on its inward iovement will positively start another Apiston 0n its outward movement-v should it happen to stick; andthe third Jfault being obvli-ated by providing the dislr with a ,transverse recess in its periphery along the tace Nof each ot the. pistons for recei ino; collect inatihe cylindrical chamber and tend to clog' thepump. Y
A practical embodiment of our invention is represented in the accompanying drawings in which,
Figure 1 represents the pump in sideele vatiefn, Fig. 2 represents the'samein end elevation, liig. 3 represents the pump in section taken in the plane of the line Hlf--IliI of Fig. 1,
and
Fig. Il represents the pump in section taken along the plane of the line lV--lW ont Fig. 2.
'lhe pump comprises the casing 1 and end plates 2, 3, a having suitable inlet and outlet ports 5, 6. A cylindrieally mounted rotary disk.7 is
located w1 'hin the cylindrical chamber 4, its
liti
draft being; denoted by 8.
` Tangentially arranged spring-pressed 4pistons, in the present instance two overlapping,
the foreign matter which might` forming a cylindrical chamber.
pistons 9, l0, are slidably mounted in the rotary disk i, the springs l1, 12, serving to force the pistons outwardly against the inner perimeter of the cylindrical chamber di. Transverse recesses 13, 14:, are located in the peripheryof the rotary disk 7, along the faces of the pistons 9, l0, in position to receive any foreign matter which may collect in the cylindrical chamber andthus obviate' any liability of the pump becomingl clogged by the lodgment of such foreign matter be tween the inner perimeter of the cylindrical halinloer i and the periphery ot the rotary is Z.
Means are employed whereby either piston on its inward movement will positively start the otherpiston on its outward inereinent should it happen to sticlr, which ineens in the present instance, is shown as a linger 15, secured to the piston 9 and projeetinp,l into position to engage a shoulder itl on the piston 10. This finger 'l5 forms a lost 'motion connection between the two pistons,
the said n er bein so arranoed that iii one of the pistons tails to start on its outu ward 'movement by becoming stuelr or through the weakness oft its spring', the inward movement of the other piston will,
through the said finger, positively start the First :named piston on its outward movement, thus automatically correcting this fault in the pump.
By arran M,ingr the pistons tangentially in stead of radially, they Worlr more easily and F may be made longer than heretofore.

"l il.
llt is obvious that various changes may-be r.resorted to in the form, construction and arrangein nt 4otjthe several parte without departingy from the spirit and scope oit our invention, and hence we do not `wish to limit ourselves. strictly to the structure herein shown and described, but
What we claim is:
1. 1n .a rotary puuipvh cylindrical chain ber having suitable inlet and outlet pints,l
an eccentrically mounted rotary dish,
`spring-pressed pistons slidingF therein, said pistons being parallel to each other with re spect to a diametrical plane, and a ineciraiiii cal means for positively operating said pis tons whereby one piston on its'inward move-- ment will positively start another piston on its outward movement should it happen to stick. y
2. ln a rotary pump, a Icylindrieal chamber having suitable inlet andoutlet ports,
lill@ an eccentrically mounted rotary disk, spring p'ressed pistons sliding therein, said pistons being parallel to each other with respect to a diametrical plane, one of said pistons being provided with a finger arranged to engage another piston, whereby one piston on its inward movement will positively start another piston on its outward movement should it happen to stick., l
3. In a rotary pump, a cylindrical chamber having suitable inlet and outlet lports, an eccentrically mounted rotary disk, spring pressed pistons sliding therein, said pistons .piston a being parallel to each other with respect to a diametrieal plane, one of said pistons being provided with a shoulder and another finger arranged to engage said shoulder, whereby one piston on its inward movement will positively start another pistonl on its outward movement should it happen' to stick.
In testimony, that We claim the foregoing as our invention, we have signed our names 25 day of July, 1917.
