Description

W. E. FOWLER, IR. INTEGRAL BRAKE BEAM.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 23, 1917.

WILLIAM E. FOWLER, JR., OIE CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR-TO AMERICAN STEEL FOUNDRIES, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
INTEGRAL BRAKE-BEAM.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Application led June 23, 1917. Serial No. 176,546.
To all lwhom t may concern 'Be it known that I. WILLIAM E. FoWLnR,
Jr., a citizen ofthe United -States, and resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain. new and useful Improvements in Integral Brake- Beams, of which the following is a specication. My invention relates to brake beams for railway cars and more particularly `to a novel integrally formed or cast brake beam. One of the obje-ts of this invention is to secure in a brake beam the ,greatest possible efficiency with a given weight of metal.
Another object is to provide a simple brake beam adapted to meet the various requirements for successful commercial operation.
These and other objects are accomplished by providing a metal brake beam comprising a body portion of uniform section formed of a horizontal web and vertical fianges, and trunnions integral with said bortlly portion at its opposite ends.
h panvlrg sheet of drawings, in which,
vFigure 1 is a plan view of a brake beam constructed in accordance with my invention; j i
Fig. 2 is an edge View of the same, and
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken in the plane of line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
For accomplishing the objects lof this invention. it is found that. a beam of substantially'I-shape in section serves best. For this reason I have shown inthe drawings a beam of I-shape in cross section, the beam having a horizontal web 10 and vertical flanges 11 and 12. The brake beam is ofuniform secconnected This beam is e lnvention is illustrated on the accomtion, and has intermediate tured portions 13 in the web to which the force applying means may be operatively an integral structure, preferably cast, trunnions 14 being cast f or formed integral with the bodv portion at its opposite ends. In this particular case the trunnions are shown as having a peripheral groove 15, by means of which an adjustable brake head of a common form may be mounted thereon.
It is apparent that various forms of trunnionsmav be provided on the ends of the beam without departure from. my invention, and it is my intention to cover broadly 'the idea of providing a metal brake beam comprising a body of uniform cross section formed of a horizontal web and vertical anges, and trunnions integral with said body portion at its opposite ends.
claim:
1. A metal brake beam comprising a body portion of uniform section formed of va horizontal web and vertical anges, and trunnions integral with said body portion at its opposite ends.
2. A metal brake beam comprising a body portion of uniform I-section, having a horizontal web and vertical flanges, and trunnions integral opposite ends.
Signed at South Whitley, Indiana, this 20th day of June, 1917.
