Be it known that we, WILLIAM A. B001: and Bremen G. Boon, both citizens of the United States, residing at Chicago, Cook county, Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Side Bearings, of which the following is a full, clear, con-.

The object of the invention is to provide a side hearing more particularly adapted for use on railway cars and wherein an antifriction member, such as a; roller, is mounted .in a cradle which is adapted to tilt aboilt an axis transverse to the axis of the antifriction member, the invention contemplatspecification, Figure 1 is a vertical, sectional view of portions of a body bolster and a truck bolster and showing the invention in connection therewith. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the side bearing proper, portions being broken away to prevent crowding of the drawing. ' In said drawing, 10 denotes the under face of a body bolster against which the antifriction roller is ada ted to bear and 11 indi-' cates the correspon ing opposite portion of a truck bolster. The improved roller side bearing, designated generally by the reference A, is shown as attached to the truck bolster.
The side bearing A comprises an antifriction roller B, a tilting or rocking cradle C, and a base member D. The base member D comprises alower plate portion 12 seating directly on the truck bolster and having extended flanges 13 at the four corners thereof to provide the necessary clearance for the rivets 14 by which the base member D is secured to the truck bolster. At its ends, the base member D is provided 'with a pair of up-standing walls or flanges 1515, each u of which is provided on its inner face with Specification of Letters latent.

The cradle C is substantially of rectangular hollow formation and at its ends near the bottom is provided with arcuate flanges 17 which slide within the said arcuate grooves 16. In this manner, it is apparent that the cradle C is adapted to tilt or rock upon the base mem ber D and in order to relieve the flanges 17 of pressure, the base member D is provided with a palr of arcuate bearing surfaces 18-18 which cooperate with correspondingl curved under surfaces 1919 of theera e C. The cradle C is hollow, asabovedeseribed, to accommodate the anti-friction roller B, the latter being1 preferably provided with I ing 20 through which ex-. tends the sup orting axle'21. The axle 21 istapered at 0th ends as indicated at 22, one of said axle ends bein driven into a corresponding recess form in one of the side walls 23 of the cradle. The opposite side wall 23 of the cradle at each side of the opening provided for the axle 21, is recessed as indicated at 242-1, to permit the insertion of a wedge shaped tool whereby the portions of metal 25-25 may be peened'over against the end of the axle 21 to prevent the latter from comin out.
In order to retain t e cradle on the base 85 member D, at all times and also to limit the amount of tilting, keys 2626 are rovided, the latter having turned-over hea 27 and adapted to extend down through recesses 28 provided in the base-member D. The flanges 17. of the cradle C. are recessed, as indicated at 29, the width of said recesses being greater than the width of the keys 26, the excess width being dependent u on the'amount of tilting or rocking desire for the cradle C.

' With the arrangement herein shown and described, it is apparent that a stron and durable construction is provided an one requirin a relatively small amount of metal inasmuc as the base member D for su porting the cradle is reduced in weight su stany tially to a minimum. By permitting the cradle C to tilt, as here' before described, it is obvious that the surface of the antifriction roller B will at all times accommodate itself to the inclination of the under surface of the bod bolster against which it bears, assuming t e roller side bearing attached to the truck bolster.
What is claimed is:
1. In a bearing of the the combination with a retainin member, a hollow rectangular cradle, an' a roller mounted within said cradle, of cooperating arcuate flanges and grooves on said member and cradle to permit tilting of the cradle.
