REFLECTOR CUT-OFF FOR HEADLIGHTS.
a ,asaaee.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 31, 1918.
Application filed April 22, 1918. Serial no. 229,892.
following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
The invention relates to automobile headlights and means for controlling the light from the same; and the improvement consists in providing a mechanical reflector cutoff for the upper portion of the parabolic reflector so that the reflection of the light is limited to a predetermined height, the cutofl being so arranged that the upwardly directed light rays are reflected back throu h the source of light to the lower portion of t e parabolic reflector so that the major portion of the light rays from the source of li ht are reflected upon the roadway as desir and the invention consists in the novel features and combinations hereinafter set forth and claimed.
' In the drawings, Fi re 1 is a vertical sectional view of the hea light or lamp showing the construction and arrangement of the parts, the control of the light rays being shown by dotted line. Fig. 2 is a detail front perspective view of the reflector cut-ofl removed from the lamp; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the under and inner sides of the reflector cut-ofl" showing the construction and arrangement of the same.
Like characters of reference refer to corresponding parts in the several views.
The numeral 10 designates a parabolic reflector lamp for automobiles which is constructed with substantially parabolic shaped outer casing 11. The casing 11 is arranged in spaced relation to the parabolic shaped reflector 12, a light post 13 being connected to the center of the reflector 12. The re-' flector 12 is supported by the outwardly turned flange 14 around the outer rim of the reflector 12 which flange 14 braces against the inner wall of the casing 11 thereby holding the outer rim of the parabolic reflector 12 and the casing 11 firmly in the attached position.
. A glass 15 is provided to cover the front of the reflector 12, which glass is'held in lace by the inclosing rim 16. The rim 16 is attached to the casing 11 by spaced screws 17 around the periphery of the casing. A
groove 18 is provided in the outwardly turned flange rim 14 to receive therein a packing 19 against which the supportin rim 20 of the reflector cutofl' 21 rests and t ereby prevents all rattling as well as inclosing the interior of the reflector. The rim 20 also has a groove 22 with packing 23 therein which extends around the semi-circular rim 20 of the reflector cut-ofl 21, the glass 15 resting firmly against the packing 23 for the upper half of the reflector and against the packing 19 for the lower half, all the parts being held in their proper relation to one another by means of the inclosing rim 16.
The reflector cut-ofl 21 conslsts of the semi-circular rim 20 which is su ported within the reflector 12 as hereinbe ore described by means of the inclosing rim 16 pressing the packings 19 and 23 thereagainst. A parabolic or semi-circular shaped cut-off plate 24 for the upper portion of the parabolic reflector is attached to the lower ends 25 of the rim 20 preferably by means of the angle brackets 26 and screws 27 and extends into the parabolic reflector. The front edge 28 of the reflector cut-ofl plate 24 is turned downwardly with a central-projection 29 to which the semi-circular name and screen plate 30 is attached. The cut-ofl plate 24 is shaped to fit within the reflector 12 immediately above the light 33 and light ost 13, inclining downward slightly towa the front of the reflector. A semi-circular bulbous shaped upward projection 32 is provided in the reflector cut-0d 21 which fits immediately over thelamp bulb 31, the shape of the inner side of the bulbous portion 32 being so designed as to reflect the light rays back to the source of light 33 and through said source of light to the lower portion of the parabolic reflector 12 by which it is reflected in parallel alinement upon the roadway. e entire under'surface of the reflector cut-ofi plate 24 is polished or coat- 0 which reflector cut-01f utilizes a large portion of I ferent designs of parabolic reflector automobile headlights.
I claim as new 1. A reflector cut-ofl' for electric headlights and the like, composed of an a proximately horizontal plate of substantial y semicircular shape having an upwardly extending bulb-like part to receive the upper portion of the electric bulb, a substantially semi-circular rim secured to the upper half of the headlight reflector at the front of the latter, said rim having a semi-circular flange extending rearwardly thereof, angle-brackets having one arm secured to the flange at the ends thereof, and means to secure said plate to the other arms of the angle brackets, said plate having a central shield depending from the center thereof.
2. A reflector cut-off for electric headlights and the like, composed of an approximately horizontal plate of substantially semicircular shape having an upwardly extending bulb-like part to receive the upper portion of the electric bulb, a substantially semi-circular rim secured to the upper half of the headlight reflector at the front of the latter, and means to secure the plate to the ends of said rim.
3. A reflector cut-ofi' for headlights and the like composed of a substantially semicircular ring-like member having a part clamped between the headlight glass and the reflectorat the top portions of the same,
. said member also having a part extending into the reflector and engaging the latter to the top and adjacent side parts of the reflector, said member having front and rear depressed parts, packin in each of the depressed parts, the pac 'ng at the front being engaged with the headlight lass and the packing at the rear with the re ector, means to secure the headlight glass in place so as to clamp the member in position, a plate overlying the light, and means to secure the plate to the ends of the member.
5. A reflector cut-off for headlights and the like, composed of a substantially semicircular rin -like member, said member having a part ormed to engage the upper half of the headlight and to be held in clamped position thereon by the headlight glass, a substantially horizontal cut-off plate formed to engage over the source of light, and means to rigidly secure said plate to the ends of said memberso as to hold said ends spread apart and against movement toward each other.
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses. OTHO M. OTTE. Witnesses:
