To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, CONRAD NoRDFoRs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jersey City Heights, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Metal-Delivering Pump, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates `to a pump for delivering molten metal, which is capablepof general use but s particularly adapted for use in the casting of stereotype printing plates.
The principal objects of the invention are to provide a simple and convenient arrangement by' which the metal can be pumped by the use of compressed air; to provide means whereby the entire control of the pump can be provided for by meansofa single lever; to provide means whereby the metal will be kept in the pump until it is under considerable pressure and entirely fills the discharge-outlet of the pump chamber and will then be discharged through the nozzle in a solid stream and-thus prevent the preliminary discharge of mnall quantities of metal before the main body is ready to be delivered; and to provide means whereby upon movement of the lever the metal-holding chamber will first be cut off from connection. with the outside air, thereafter connected with a source of air under pressure, and finally the metal will be released and .allowed to flow out through the nozzle.

The connection of the pipes 12 and 15 is controlled by a valve 13 to the stem 17 of which an operating leverl is attached. The upper end of the valve casing 18 has two openings, one of which is connected with the pipe 15 and the other 16 serves for leading ,the` air pressure out of the chamber 10.
The -valve stem 17 has an arm 21 xed thereon, operatlng between stops 22 and 23 cast on the valve casing. These stops regulate the extreme positions of the valve stem and operating lever 14. A balance weight 24 is shown for bringing the lever back to the osition shown in the drawing, after it has een operated.
The chamber 10 is provided with a port 25 at the bottom, opening into a discharge passage 26 which extends upwardly within the pot A to a position above the top of the pump body 10, or at least above the top of the level of molten metal in the pot A. This passage 26 is really a part of the' chamber 10.l An outlet opening at the top of this passage is closed by a valve 27 which delivers into a nozzle 28 and is provided with a valve-stem 29 having a projecting end 30 a-t'the top. A springl 31 is provided to normally hold the valve closed. This projecting end 30 is in the, line of motion of the lever 14 so as to be depressed thereby vwhen the lever is depressed to its limiting position. It will be observed that the valve 27 is normally closed unless the same is depressed, and that ythe pressure of metal against the valve 27 tends to hold it more tightly closed. l
The operation of the device is very slmple. The pressure of the metal from the melting pot normally raises-the valve 11 so that it may enter the chamber 10 and passage 26 and rise in the latter to the level of the metal in the pot. ' Although I have illustrated and described only a'single form of the invention, I am aware of the fact that many modifications can be made therein by any person skilled in the art without departing from the sc ope of the invention as expressed in the claims.
Therefore, I do not wish to be limited to all the details of construction herein disclosed and described, but what I ldo claim is l. In a metal pump, thecombination with a chamber having a. passage for receiving molten metal and an outlet above the maximum lever of the metal in said chamber, of means for introducing compressed air into said chamber to force the metal into said outlet from theV chamber, and a valve normally closing said outlet and adapted to be moved against the pressure of themetal in the chamber while opening.
` 2. In a metal pump, the combinationwith a pot and a chamber thereinfor receiving molten metal therefrom, of a nozzle, a port connecting the nozzle with said chamber and having anormally closed valve provided with a stem projecting therefrom for controlling the admission of metal from said chamber to the nozzle and through said port, and a -means for controlling the admission of pressure on the metal in the chamber to force it out'past the valve and for pressing in the projecting end of the valve stem to open the valve and allow the metal to pass by.
3. In a metal pump, the combination with a chamber for receiving molten metal, of an outlet valve located and arranged to close by the pressureof metal thereon from said chamber, and means for forcing the metal out of said chamber against said valve and for positively opening said valve tol allow' the metal to pass.
4; In a metal pump, the combination with a pot for molten metal, of a chamber therein having .an outlet passage extending upwardly from the bottom of said chamber, means for introducing compressed air into the top of said chamber to force the metal up in the outlet passage, a nozzle connected with the top of said outlet passage above the top of the pot, and means for normally closing the connection between the outlet passage and nozzle.
5. In a metal pump, the combination with a melting pot, and a metal receiving chamber therein having twol ports, one communicating with lthe interior of the meltingpot and the other constituting a discharge outlet, a valve for the irst named port, an upwardly extending outlet passage connected with the second port, a nozzle at the top of said outlet passage having a valve opening inwardly for controlling the flow of metal `therefrom to the nozzle, means for normally closing said valve, said valve being adapted to be opened from the outside of the nozzle, and means for introducing compressed-air into the top of said chamber.
6. In a metalpump, the combination with 'a melting pot, and a chamber therein for the lever isfuily depressed and the valve in position to allow compressed air to iiow from vone pipe to the other.
. 7. In a metal pump, the combination with a melting pot, and a chamber therein for receiving molten metal therefrom, of a valve provided with a stem for controlling the discharge of metal from said chamber, a pipe extending from said chamber,` a compressed air pipe, a valve adapted to connectsaid pipes, a counterweiglited lever for operatinghsaid valve located in position to engage said valve stem when the lever is fully depressed and the valve in position to allow compressed air to flow from one pipe to the other, and means for limiting the motion of the lever.
8. In a metal pump, the combination with a melting pot, and a chamber therein for receiving molten metal therefrom, of a nozzle on said pot having a port connecting it with said chamber and a Valve provided with a stem projecting therefrom for controlling the admission of metal from said chamber to the. nozzle through said port, said valve opening inwardly toward the chamber, whereby the pressure of metal on thevalve Vfrom the chamber will tend to close it,
