MECHANICAL MOVEMENT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT H. DE Von, a citizen of the United States, residing at Westfield, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mechanical Movements, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a mechanical movement particularly adaptable for actuating a take-up for looper-threads on sewing machines. 1 I
The invention aims to provide mechanism between a rotary driving shaft and an oscillatory driven shaft having a thread-arm or other stitch-forming element fixed thereto for imparting oscillations to the driven shaft each interrupted by a dwell that may be timed to occur before, at or after the driven shaft changes its direction of motion at one extremity of its oscillation. The construction broadly comprises a plurality of take-up arms fixed to a shaft having a sliding connection with one end of a lever which is movably fulcrumed interme diate its ends on the arm of a rocker and at its other end embraces an eccentric on a rotary driving shaft parallel with the driven shaft.
The invention also consists in certain de- .tails of construction which will appear in the following description of the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view and Fig. 2 a side elevation, partly in section, of an embodiment of my invention as applied to a sewing machine, sufficient of the construction being shown to make clear its application. Fig. 3 is an enlarged view of the take-up and eccentric, the arms and center of the eccentric being numbered the same in the relative positions thev assume during a complete rotation of the mainshaft. Fig. 4 is a diagram of the movement of the take-up arms in different positions of adjustment. Fig. 5 is a graphic diagram showing how the adjustment enables the dwell to be timed before and after the takeup arms reach the end of their stroke.
The invention is shown embodied in a twothread chain-stitch sewing machine having needles 1 cooperating with thread-carrying loopers 2 disposed at an angle to the line of feed and supported on a carrier 3 which is slidingly and pivotally sleeved on a fulcrumshaft 1, an extension 5 of the carrier having a ball-and-socket connection 6 with a strap 7 embracing an inclined crank on the main shaft 9, substantially as in applicants copending case Serial No. 113,022, renewed August 3, 1916.
With each of the loopers 2 a take-up arm 10 is differentially moved to control the thread carried by the looper so as to insure the formation of perfect stitches in a manner fully disclosed in said copending application. I I
This application is directed to protect a mechanism for operating the take-up arms and it will now be described.
The take-up arms 10 are endwise adjust ably secured by screws 11 to a shaft 12 sup ported on bearing blocks 13 and 14. A col lar 15 adjustably secured to the shaft 12 on one side of the block 14 and an offset 16' suitably secured to the shaft at the other side of the block 1 1 restrain endwise movement of the shaft 12 and compel each -of the take-up arms 10 to oscillate in a plane. A pin 17 is secured in the offset 16 substantially at right angles to the shaft 12 and is slidingly connected by a sleeve 18 having a laterally arranged pin 19 with the end of a lever 20. The lever 20 has an apertured boss 21 receiving the pin 19, the end of which pin is tapped for the screw 22 having a relatively large head that is adapted to rest against an end of the apertured boss 21.
At its other end the lever 20 is fashioned into a strap 23 loosely embracing the eccentric 21 fast on the main-shaft 9. Intermediate its ends the lever is fulcrumed as at 25 to an arm 26 on a pin 27 in the bearing bracket 28, which is tongue-and-grooved as at 29 on the block 14 and adjustably connected in place, slots 30 in the bracket 28 through which pass the fasteningscrews 31 tapped into the block being provided for that purpose.
Shifting the bearing bracket 28 in the direction of the arrow Fig. 2 causes the takeup arms t dwell at increasingly later time as graphically illustrated in Fig. 5. The dwells may be timed to occur before or after the arms arrive at their extreme retracted position. .By this adjustment for timing it is possible to suit the take-up for cooperation with loopers in a Wide variety of chainstitch machines.
