"lhc broad idvn involrvd in my invention in to provide un ons tor intorrnptiug tho inlzikr ot' gnsolvnu for tho purpose of prvvvnlzing tho flow of cnrirhod rupor through the intake pipe of u, nmnifold ot-n1i internal i-onihustion engimi for the purpose of economiziiig in the consumption of fuel "under Vii rious emergencies and operating conditions i-sperially where an internal combustion is utilized for driving 'a motor vehicle. I have therefore devised means capable of ready installation in connectionwith various'types of ca rbureting appara'tusesnccording to the construction thereof, one form of the. invention being adaptable to carburetors h vlyeafor regain; the {low of gasolene to tha carburetor in" another form of the il'iVEIltlOIlhelp n plicable'tothe intake pipis of mahifiilii cases whiarethe carburetor-lg! nrenobfirovided types of structures, I have sho wnin Fig, 1
of a moton means whereby the inflow of gasolene into a earbureter may be controlled. and have also shown means whereby the flow of enriched vapor through the intake manifold pipe may be regulated: these deviees both accomplishin; the same result.
The invention is shown as applied to an internal eombnstion engine .2 obviously of any suitable type. the latter here being shown as mounted upon the frame of an automobile It and is provided with an intake pipe 4 for the manifold 5. To the lower end of the intake pipe -i there is connected it earbureter it a simple type'of which is shown, this being provided with a needle valve 7 operative to open or rinse the inlet port 8 connected to the gasolene supply pipe (not shown). The needle *alve 7 has an upwardly extending stem portion 9 passing through the top of the carburetor, the stem being surrounded by a spring, 10 reacting on the earbureter or other suitabl support and against the lower side of a head or shoulder 11 on the end oi the stem 9. For the purpose of tllpiessitlgl' the needle valve against the opening aetion of its spring 10 there is provided a rod or iever 12 which may. be suitably eouneeted to the head 11 in this instant-e the rod being passed through the dash 1' and provided with a pedal 14 on its outer end to be disposed eonveniently to the operator o that the lever may be op erated by foot if desired. it is desirable that the open position ot' the needle valve, 7 may he regulated so as to give the best running elli i n y by the proper supply of lzhnlene to the earbureter and engine. and to tltll't. this proper adjustment. an adjust in; llt\'lt in the form of a serew l i is provided and adjustable in a eonvenient support or threaded hraeket arm 17, the serew having uitable r nneetion with an adjusting rod 18 whieh may be extended up through the dash and provided with a handle or treadle 19 as may be desired. Obviously the adjusting serew It? ran be. turned to any suitable position to bear against the head ll of the stem 9 ol' the needle valve and the. point of the latter properly disposed tlt't'tH'tling to the eonditiou to permit the. normal in How of gasolen'e for the formation of a rombustible vapor.
From the foregoing it. will be seen that the operator when desiring to slow down the peed of the ear or when roasting, may we tirelyrut oil the supply of gasolene at the supply port H by the applieation ol' the foot. to the pedal ti and the losing ot' the valve 7 aL'ainst ils spring it). the valve being held (l i-t(l tor anv suitable period and then when released by the operator :uiloinatii'allv opens to the position a; determined by th adjust.- int! devire lfi.
.The interruption of the supply of a roln int-dildo vapor to the motor may be aehieved a artiou ol' the spring.
also by the provision of a suitable form of valve here shown as a three-way valve 20 mounted in the intake or supply pipe 4 and having a lever arm 21 to \vhieh is eonneeted a push rod 22 extended through the dash l3 and provided with a treadle or handle :23 on its inner end within eonvenient reaeh ol the operator. The valve 20 is adapted to be normally malintained and automati -ally re turned to open position by the provision of any suitable device as for instanee a spring 25 one end of whieh is eonneeted to the push rod 2'2 and the other to any convenient fixed part as for instance to the dash 13. So long as the valve 20 is in an open position combustible vapor is drawn by the. operation of the engine piston into the cylinder through the supply of air and gasolene at. the earbureter; but when the valve 20 is thrown to a position to out off How from the earlnireter, it. will then open eommunieation with a port- :20 leading to the atmosphere outside of the pipe, so that on the combustion stroke of the piston in the motor. air under atmospheric pressure may pass t'reely into the rylinders of the engine and thus obviate any undue tendency to the formation of a vacuum in the cylinder.
It, will be seen that; either form of my invention is capable of performing the desired funetion ot' interrupting the flow of an enriehed vapor to the manifold of the engine if desired, with the resulting material saving of gasolene at the time when a eombustible vapor is not desired in the engine.
it is understood ot' eourse. that there may he various nmdilieations nd ehanges in the organization, details of parts and the rombination of the same without departing from the spirit of my invention and within the 5 limits of the appended claims. What is elaimed as new is l. The rombination in a carburetor, of a needle valve for the latter controlling flow of fuel tothe air rhamberot' the earbureter, a spring for normally opeuing'tl'ie valve. means for elosing the valve, and means independent thereof for regulating the opening of the valve independently of the usual throttle.
