[II J 1 INVENTOR. 20M 7*. 1 'w WITNESSES. @wwr PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB F. SAIGER, OF SHELBY, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN NUT-LOCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,815, dated July 9, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it. known that I, JACOB F. SAIGER, of Shelby, in-the county of Richland and State of Ohio, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in N ut-Locks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a side view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of my invention. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of my invention.
This invention has relation to nut-locks for railroad-joints, bridges, &c.; and consists in the construction and novel arrangement of a clasp so applied as to prevent the nut from turning, and provided with a spiral-spring hinge, which forces it into position, but allows it to be raised for the proper adjustment of the nut, all as hereinafter specified.
The drawing shows my improvement applied to the nuts of a rail-joint.
A represents the rails; B, the fish-plate; G, the nuts; and D, the clasp. The clasp is made of elastic wire, is of a rectangular or other suitable form, and is secured rigidly to the fish-plates of a railroad, or to any other suitable device or part of any other structure. At the end of said clasp next to the extension, embedded in the fish-plate, a double or rightand-left hand spiral spring, E, is formed by properly bending the wire. This spring tends to force the clasp against the surface of the fish-plate, but yields when the clasp is drawn out. The clasp embraces the nut on three sides, as shown, and holds it securely.
This device is of great utility for its purpose, being cheap, permanent, and capable of very ready adjustment.
'What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The nut-lock, consisting of the rectangular wire-clasp D and coil spring E, and secured to the plate B, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JACOB F. SAIGER.
Witnesses:
