However, as will now be seen in i iew ot the preceding description, the nuts of the bolts 23 may be released when the face plate may be shifted vertically upon the box to. dispose the heads of the bolts opposite the enlarged portions of the said slots. The bolts may then be retracted to dispose the heads thereot'within the recesses 2 when the face plate may be entirely removed. As will be apbetween the outer face of the box and the wear face of the wheel'is restricted, the shoulder is made relatively narrow so that the upper extremity of the plate may be readily swung outwardly to disengage the said shoulder from within the said seat. lfi nrthernioie, particular attention is directed to the fact that the plate 19 is formed to orerlni-ng the sides of the body 10 of the box at its outer end to provide flanges cooperating with the flanges ll of the box body, as particularly shown in Fig. 1, for receiving the wedge and shoe.
As particularly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, the body 10 of the box is cut away from its inner side face to its outer side face to form the crown brass seat 21. and below this seat, the inner sides (at the box body are further cutaway to provide oppositely disposed horizontal channels separated from the crown brass seat by horizontal ribs 26;
The upper sides of these ribs are formed with beveled faces or shoulders 27 while the lower sides of the said ribs are formed with fiat shoulders 28. As in the instance of the crown brass seat, the channels 25 also open through the inner and outer side faces of the box. The ends of these springs engage the brasses adjacent the extremities thereof while the bowed intermediate portions of the said springs are, as particularly shown in Fig. 3, received .within suitable arcuate recesses in the said ribs for holding the springs'against accidental displacement.
As will now be clear, the crown brass will rigidly support. the journal 11 under the weight of the load while theside brasses present a relatively large bearing area to the journal for taking care of the horizontal forces exerted against. these latter brasses. As the crown brass wears away the side brasses .will float. upwardly withinthe channels 25 against the tension of the springs 31. An automatic adjustment of the said side brasses is thus permitted so that these brasses will always properly bear against the sides of the journal. Furthermore, since the springs 31 will be nori'nally flexed by the presence of the side brasses within the channel these springs will prevent any chattering or rattling of the said side brasses. llhen the side brasses become worn, liners may be interposed in the channels beneath the said brasses for taking up such wear and in Figs. ii and I have shown the use of one of such liners at Detachably connected to the inner side face of the body 10 of the box is a cap plate 33 for holding the side and crown brasses against inward displacement. This capplate is formed to fit around the upper extremity of the journal receivi n g recess in the body of the box and is held by' a plurality of bolts 34; embedded in the inner side of the box body, the said bolts extending loosely through the plate and receiving nuts 35 clamping the plate in position. Projecting inwardly from the upper portion of the plate is an arcuate lateral flange 36 fitting within the crown brass seat '21 to engage the curved wall thereof and bearing against the adjacent end of the crown brass 29 for holdinc said brass in position. The side portions of the plate 33 are formed with inwardly directed flanges 3? fitting within the channels 25 agains the bottom walls thereof to engage the side brasses 30 for holding these brasses in position. The flanges 36 and 37 of the cap plate will thus" rigidly hold the side and crown brasses against inward displacement while the faceplate 19 will rigidly hold the said brasses against'outward displacement. At the same time the said flanges will act to reinforce the cap plate and ,will cotiperate with the bolts 3% for rigidly supporting the cap plate in position. Should it be desired to remove the side and crown brasses at the inner end of the box, this result may be readily accomplished by simply removing the cap plate. Thus the several brasses of 5 this result may be readily accomplished by simply displacing the face plate 19.
