Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it'known that I, CHARLES W. HAW- THORNE, acitizen of the United States, and a resident of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Rolling Bars, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to rolling mill machinery and more especially to a process and devices for twisting and returning merchant bar or other roll work intermediately of its passage between two successive sets of rolls, and more especially in certain aspects of the invention to twisting and returning bars of elongated cross section.
The objects and advantages of the invention will be set forth in part hereinafter and in part will be obvious herefrom, the same being attained through the steps, combinations and instrumentalities pointed out in the appended claims.
The invention consists in the novel parts, constructions, arrangements, combinations and improvements herein shown and described.
The accompanying drawings, referred to herein and constituting a part hereof, illustrate a machine embodying the invention and also certain steps in my process, said drawings taken with the description serving to explain the principles of the invention.

The invention is applicable to mills for rolling merchant or like bar. and is so shown in the present drawings, but in certain of its the orifice formed by general oval form and complementary to each other, such oval having its long axis, say, substantially vertical and the next succeeding set of rolls through which a bar will pass will have their grooves and the grooves 'at the line of contact of the rolls of oval form, and with the long axis thereof substantially horizontal. The purpose of this arrangement, in part, is to get a thorough rolling of the stock, and also to prevent the formation of fins at the edges of the stock at the line of juncture or-contact of the pair of rolls, as the stock passes therethrough. It will be understood that the invention is not limited to the oval form of rolls or roll aperture, such a form being in general use and is used by way of example.
In the embodied form of invention there is shown a set of rolls 1 and 2. The rolls 1 and 2 are correspondingly grooved, in the well-known manner, to form an oval or oblate aperture or pass such as is shown in Fig. 4. The grooves in the rolls are in dicated by reference numerals 3 and 4, re-
spectively. The rolls 1 and 2 are shown mounted in a suitable housing 5 and 6, of any convenient or approved form.
In accordance with certain features of my invention, I make the return bend in the bar injthe direction of the shorter cross-sectional axis of the bar. and also when necessary turn or twist the bar cross-sectionally so that the bend may be so made. Thus the bar offers the least resistance to bending and is also in most favorable position to follow a return-guide preparatory to entering the guide box of the next subsequent pass.
By my invention, I make the cross-sectional twist or turn in the bar in a. substantially straight line or run with. respect to the pass in a set of rolls, and also I make the cross-sectional twist or turn in the guide very gradually and gently. Thus all tendency toward self or continued twisting by the bar after leaving the delivery end of the twister is avoided, the work of twisting is rendered less diilicult and more certain and the bar is easily and continuously guided through the curved repeater without trouble, and the tendency to work out of the repeater groove or to pass out of angular alinement with the entry guide of the next succeeding pass is avoided. The mechanism of my invention, furthermore, is simple and economical of construction and is readily accessible throughout.
Closely adjacent to the rolls 1 and 2, and adjustably mounted upon the cross frame 7 of the housing of the rolls is a guide box 8, adapted to receive the bar m as it is led out from the pass between the rolls 1 and 2. The guide 8 is internally apertured to correspond to the shape and disposition of the pass between the pair of rolls. This guide when employed serves in the well-known manner to aline and guide the bar s it issues from the rolls.
in accordance with certain features of the invention, the twisting or turning means is substantially straight or unidirectional, and it is located or positioned in line with the bar 2r passing through the rolls, and with the guide 8 when this device is used. As enibodied, a relatively long tube 10 is provided, which is preferably straight or rectilinear throughout its length, and is positioned in alinement with the rolls 1 as shown in Fig. l oi the drawings. lhis tube 10 is internally orificed from end to end, such orifice being or" oval or oblate or other form conforming substantially to the cross-sectional term of the bar at, the position of the orifice very gently or gradually, and preferably symmetrically, changing or twisting through substantially a quarter circle or 90 between one end and the other of the tube 16. ln the exemplified embodiment, this will be understood from Figs. 3, 4 and 5. The orifice at one end of the tube 10 is shown with its longer axis in horizontal position at 11 in Fig. 4 and with that axis in vertical position at 12 in Fig. 5, the'gradual rotation or twist between the two positions being accomplished by the twisted tube 10, shown in Fig. 3.

Said rolls are mounted in a housing 20 and 21, having a cross piece or rest bar 22. Mounted upon said cross piece 22 is an adjustable guide block 23 for alining the bar :0 preparatory to its passing through. the rolls l6 and 17. Between the discharge end of the tube 10 and the rolls 16 and 17, or, the guide block 23, is a repeater or curved guide 24, adapted at one end thereof to receive the bar at, and at the other end discharging or delivering it to the next succeeding rolls, or their introductoryv guide block. in accordance with certain features of the invention, the bar receives no twist or angular modification in passing through the curved guiding or repeating member 24:, but is given its angular twist or turn while runhing-in a substantially straight path which is tangential to the curved path of the repeater 24, the bend in the repeater being made in the direction oi the shortest axis of the cross-section of the bar m.
ilhe invention includes means for permit ting play of the entry guide 23 while the bar so is entering the guide and the pass and for holding the guide 23 firmly while the rolls 16 and 17 are working on the bar. In the embodied form, said means are manually actuated. ln the embodied form alongside, and preferably at eachside of guide 23 on its support 22 are wedges 25 and 26, with their parallel faces on the outside. The guide 23 is split or halved longitudinally, to permit the guide to open to receive the end of the bar in order to permit of adjustment,
and is then closed by the wedges after the bar has entered the rolls. The wedge 25 has a pin and yoke connection 27 with an arm 28 lined to shaft 29. Shaft 29 has a hand lever 30 lined thereto tor the manual adjustment oi? the wedge 25. lhus the guide 23 may be leftopen to receive the bar :0 and then wedged up tight to hold it after it has entered the pass holding the guide firmly to the extreme end. The guide and wedges are held in place by a convenient frame 31. The rest bar or support 22 is vertically adjustable on its supports. 'lhe wedge 26 has a screw rod adjustment or tightener 33 supported from rest bar 32. A wedge 34 is shown at the other side adjacent to frame or housing 21 in 6, having a screw rod adjustment or tightening means 35 supported from rest bar 32. A series of blocks 36 may also be utilized for the transverse positio ing and adjustment of guide 23, said blocks 36 being adjusted in position by the wedge 34. The rest bars 22 and 32 also have adjustments 37 upon the housings.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a rolling mill, a set of rolls provided with an elongated pass, a second set of rolls having an elongated pass at an angle to the pass of the first set of rolls, a curved repeater for conducting the bar from one of said passes to the other, and a twisting guide between said first mentioned pass and said repeater.
2. In a rolling mill, a set of rolls having an elongated pass, a second set of rolls having an elongated pass at anangle to the pass of the first set of rolls, a curved repeater for conducting a bar from said first set of rolls to said second set of rolls, a delivery guide and a twisting guide and said ing an elongated pass at an angle to the pass of the first set of rolls, means for conducting the bar from the first set of rolls to the second set of rolls, a twisting guide between said conductin means and the first set of rolls, a separa le guide between said conducting means and said second set of rolls and means for closing said'separable guide against the metal entering the pass of said second set of rolls.
