WATER-HEATER.
y, Specificationr of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 1'7, 1918.
Application filed February 8, 1917. Serial No. 147,386.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOSEPH H. BACON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lakewood, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Vater-Heaters, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to heating apparatus, the invention being more particularly directed toward a water heater of the sectional type wherein substantially similar sections are joined to each other to provide a completed water heating apparatus or boiler having the required water capacity.
The object of the invention is to provide a sectional water heater in which the section is of a form providing a large amount of heat absorbing surface, and one which is simple to cast.
Generally speaking, the invention comprises the elements and combinations thereof set forth in the accompanying claims.
Reference should be had to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is an elevation with portions in section showing a water heating section; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a water heating section; Fig. 3 is a rear elevation withl portions in section; Fig. 4 is a front elevation; and Fig. 5 is a top plan view.
Referring to Fig. 2, 1 indicates the body portion of a section. This body portion is formed with a flat back 2, and the front surface is provided with a plurality of coni cal extensions 3. These conical extensions are hollow and are cast directly as-a part of the body portion so that water circulating through the body portion 1 will also circulate through the hollow conical projections 3, and there is therefore provided a large surface for the absorption of heat.
The conical proj ectiils 8 are arranged in rows as will be clear from an inspection of the drawings, and the projections in adjacent rows are interspaced or staggered with respect to each other. The arrangement 'of the conical projections in rows enables a cleaning brush or tool to be inserted between the rows of projections so that the cleaning brush may readily remove any carbon or soot which may deposit upon the projections in the use of the heater.
At the upper portion of the section there are a plurality of walled openings 4. These walled openings are for the purpose of permitting products of combustion which may pass up between the conical projections, to circulate through the said openings 4 and deliver any remaining heat that they may contain to the upper water containing portion 5 of the section.
The body portion 1 has a back 6 which is hollow and communicates with the body 1. This back adjacent the upper portion thereof and adjacent to the opening 4 is provided with a walled opening 8 which forms a iue opening, as will later be explained. The front of the section. is provided with a cut out portion 9this cut out portion serving as a means to which a cleaning tool may be inserted. As will be seen from an inspection of Fig. 1, the upper hollow portion 5 of the section communicates with the body portion 1 of the section, the water gaining access to the upper portion 5 of the section through the passageways 10 which are between the openings 4 of the section.
Each section at the upper portions has a tubular portion 11, and at its lower portion has a tubular portion 12. These tubular portions 11 and 12 communicate with similar portions upon adjacent sections when a plurality of sections are assembled to form a water heating apparatus. Also each section is provided with suitable lugs or securing means such as indicated at 13 and 14, by which adjacent sections may be secured to each other.
/Vhen a number of sections are secured together they are arranged in such a manner that the conical extensions 3 upon one section will lie adjacent the fiat side 2 of the section next to it; also the rear portion 6 and the top water containing portions 5 of the sections will lie adjacent each other and in contact as will also the front portions of each section which are above and below the opening or space 9.
It will be seen from an inspection of Fig. 3 that the i'irst three sections beginning at the left hand side of Fig. 3 are exactly alike, however the end section at the right hand portion of Fig. 3 is reversed with respect to the other sections. This section when thus arranged has the conical projections thereon engaging or substantially engaging with the conical projections upon its adjacent section. However, this end section is in all material respects the same as the section shown in Fig. 2, except that no opening 8 is provided and no opening 9 is provided'.
'il/Then the sections are secured together to torni a water heating apparatus, it will be apparent that at the bottom or lower portion orD the sections they are spaced apart so that the products ot' combustion mayascend between the sections and contact with the conical projections 8 and the body portion oit the latter with which they are integral. The products of combustion as they pass up between the sections may readily pass through the openings l and so circulate beneath the water containing portions 5 of each of the sections, and eventually the prodf ucts ot combustion will pass out through the openings 8 formed at the rear of each section and into a box or casing 15 which in turn has an opening that communicates with a smoke pipe 16.
The openings 9 in the front of each sec tion'are covered by means of one or more plates 17 which are directly secured upon the sections as indicated in Fig. e. ll`his plate, or plates, carries a plurality of doors 18 which are hinged and when opened expose the opening 9 in the section beneath the plate, thus forming a ready means of inserting a cleaning brush which may be worked horizontally between the rows ot conical extensions.
Obviously a water heating apparatus may be made up ot' as many sections as are necessary to produce an apparatus of the desired capacity, and furthermore, it will be observed that all the sections are alike with the exception of one end section which is a re verse of the other sections.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim is:
1. ln al water heating apparatus, the combination of a plurality of sections secured together, the said sections being formed to provide spaces between them so that the products ot combustion may pass between the sections, walled openings at the upper portion ci' each ot the sections whereby the spaces between the said sections are placed in communication and an opening in each section at one side thereof, a casing secured to the said sections and communicating with the last mentioned openings in the sections, and a flue pipe connection to said casing.
2. ln a water heating apparatus, the combination of a plurality of water containing sections, the water containing portions ol each of the sections being in communication, the sections being formed to provide spaces between adjacent sections whereby products ot combustion may ascend between the sections each section having adj acent the upper portion thereof a plurality of walled openings whereby the spaces between sections may communicate, a flue opening formed in one side of each of said sections, a casing with which each flue opening in each section communicates, a flue connection for the said casing each section being provided with a cut out or open portion in a side thereof', means covering the said cut out portions when the sections are assembled, and openings permitting access through the cut out portions ot each sections to the space between adjacent sections.
8. A water heating section comprising a hollow body portion having a iiat side and an opposite side provided with hollow projections, hollow end portions for the said section which extend from the body portion substantially the same distance as the projections on the body portion one of said side portions being provided with a flue opening, the other of said side portions being provided with an elongated opening which permits cleaning of the hollow projections upon the body portion.
il, A section tor a water heater comprising a body portion having a flat side and a side from which extend hollow projections said section having an upper water containing portion which communicates with the body portion, there being openings in the body portion between the communicating parts that join the body portion proper and the upper water containing portion, the said section having end portions which extend from the body portion on the side thereoil having the aforesaid projections one ot' said side portions having a line opening therein the other of the side portions of the section having an elongated opening adjacent the aforesaid projections to permit of the cleaning thereof.
ln testimony whereof, l hereunto athx my signature.
JOSEPH H. BACON.
