FREDERICK R. SPRINGER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
- FIGURE TOY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
PatentedDec. 17, 1913.
Application filed May 28, 1917. Serial No. 171,458.
'1 '0 all whom it may concern:
' Be it known thatI, FREDERICK R. SPRINGER, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Figure Toys, of wliichthe following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in toys, and has for its objectthe provision of an improved moving toy simple and efficient in use and capable of economical manufacture. j a
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a rear view of a construction embodying my invention,
Fig. 2, a transverse horizontal section taken on line 22 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3, a section taken on line 33 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 1, a section taken on line 14: of Fig. 1. I
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawings comprises a suitable supporting frame consisting of a base member 5 and a supporting member 6 connected by two rods 7 and 8, the rod 7 being extended at 9 considerably above the frame 6. A frame 10 is arranged to slide upon rods 7 and 8 below the frame 6 and carries two upstanding rods 11 sliding freely through frame 6. Another supporting frame 12 is arranged at the upper end of the rods 11 and a propeller 13 is mounted on a shaft 14 rotatably mounted in a vertical position on frame 12. The shaft 14 is provided at its lower end with a hook 15 connected by rubber bands 16 with a hook 17 on the upper end of a rod 18 fixed in frame 10 and extended below the same as indicated.
The rod 18 is provided with an enlarged spherical head 19 sharpened or pointed at twisting or turning thereof and one or more rubber bands 10 are secured to frame 6 and passed under frame 10 to yieldingly sup port the same. The frames 10 and 12 carry fanciful figure 22 provided with foldable pivoted legs 23 as indicated( i In use the propeller 13 is first turned to twist the rubber bands 16 to provide means for operating the same. Then theframe 12 until the force of the rubber bands 10' over comes the holding force of the rubber plates 21 when the frames 10 and12 will be released for upward movement under the influence of the rubber bands 10. When the frame 10 strikes the under side of frame 6, the inertla of the moving parts serves to cause the toy to apparently jump into the air, the propeller 13 being simultaneously released from the guide rod 9 and rotating rapidly under the torsional effect of the twisted rubber bands 16. The effect of the propeller 13 is to continue the flight or movement of the device for a short time, thus-causing the same to fly or move for a considerable distance through the air. 1
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A device of the class describedcomprising a base; a frame movable with respect to said base; spring means arranged to cause movement between said base and said frame; a propeller; means for actuating said propeller; and means for simultaneously effecting movement between said base and frame and operation of said propeller, substantially as described.
2. A device of the class described com prising a base; a frame slidable with respect to said'base; apropel-ler; a rubber band arranged to operate said propeller and elfect sliding of said frame relatively to said base; and means for temporarily locking said band against untwisting, and said frame in position to place said band under tension and releasingthe same, substantially as described. y
3. As a locking means for devicesof the class described, a perforated flexible sheet; and a rod provided with a substantially spherical head somewhat larger than the perforation in said sheet, substantially as described.
4-. A device of the classdescribed comprising a base member; two upstanding rods on said basemember, one of said rods being considerably longer than the other; a supporting frame seured to said rods at the upper end of the shorter one; a frame slidable on said rods below said supporting frame; two upstanding rods on said sliding frame sliding freely through said supporting frame; a supporting frame at the upper end of said last mentioned rods slidable on the longer of said first mentioned rods; a propeller mounted on the frame at the upper end of said sliding rods; a yieldable torsional spring connection between said propeller and said sliding frame; a rod de pending from said sliding frame and having an enlarged head pointed at its lower eX- tremity; a centrally perforated holding frame mounted on said first mentioned rods; and one or more yieldable plates secured to said holding frame and centrally perforated for the passage of and temporary engagement with said head, substantially as de-i scribed.
' In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FREDERICK R. SPRINGER. Witnesses:
' JOSHUA R. H. Po'r'rs, HELEN F. LILLIs.
