To -77 whom it may concern:
Be it known that I,R0LLIE C. HILL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Memphis, in the county 'of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Propellers, of which the following is aspecification.
My invention is an improvement in propellers, and has for its object to provide a device of the character specified adapted for use with any character of vessel, wherein the propelling blades move always in a vertical position, entering and leaving the water in such position, and moving on the propelling stroke at approximately a right angle to the direction of movement of the vessel.

In the present embodiment of the invention, a framework is provided, consisting of two substantially rectangular frames 1, which are arranged in spaced parallel relation and are supported by any suitable structure 2 on the vessel, the frame in the present instance being of channel material. The upper and lower members of each frame are provided with bearings 3 and 4, respectively, the members of each pair of bearings being in alinement transversely of the frame, and shafts 5 and 6 are journaled in the bearings.

secured to each shaft 5 and 6, the levers being near the ends of the shafts and outside of the frames, and the levers at each side of the supporting frame are connected by links 9, the said links being pivoted to the levers at one end of the same. At the opposite side of the shafts 5 and 6 from the links 9 the levers have counterweights 10, as shown, wh ch are designed to counterbalance the links 9 and connected parts. Each link 9 extends below the lower lever 8 of the pair,
and below the lever each link has a sectional bearing 11, whose sections may be tightened together by means of a threaded stem 12 on one section passing through the other, and engaged by a wing nut 13.
Referring to Fig. 1, it will be seen that the members of each pair of levers 7 and 8 are arranged at angles of ninety degrees with respect to each other, that is, the lever 7 at one end of each shaft is ninety degrees in advance of the lever at the oher end of the shaft. A sprocket wheel 17 is secured to the shaft 5 between the two frames 1, and this shaft may be connected with any suitable source of power, as, for instance, a motor, by means of a chain to drive the propeller.
I claim:
1. A propeller comprising a supporting frame, upper and lower shafts journaled in the frame, levers secured tothe ends of each shaft, a link connecting the outer ends of the levers at each side of the frame and pivoted to the levers, a sectional clamp at the lower end of each link, a propelling blade having a shank engaging the bearing and adjustable vertically with respect to the link, and a counterweight in connection with each lever for balancing the lever, the link and the blade and on the opposite side of the shaft from the link, the levers at one side of the frame being arranged ninety degrees in advance of the levers at the opposite side.
2. A propeller comprising a supporting frame, upper and lower shafts journaled in the frame, levers secured to the ends of each shaft, a link connecting the outer ends of the levers at each side of the frame and pivoted to the levers, a sectional clamp at the lower end of each link, a propelling blade having a shank engaging the bearing and adjustable vertically with respect to the link, and a counterweight in connection with each lever for balancing the lever, the link and the blade, and on the opposite side of the shaft from the link.
