Be it known that I, RAYMOND B. GLIDDEN, a citizen of the United States, residin at Kewanee, in the county of Henry and tate of Illinois, have invented certa-in new and useful Improvements in Watering- Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
My invention concerns certain features of novelty and advantage in 'watering-appliances of the fountain or reservoir type operatin on thel vacuumprin'ciple. Its prime or lea ing object is to provide an apparatus of this general type `and style which, while structurally simple, inexpensive to manufacture, and unlikely to become `damaged. in shipment -or service, is, nevertheless, strong, iirm, and rigid.
One of its salient features is the employment ofthe water-supply-tank in such a way as'to strengthen and reinforce its own supporting frame.' The' latter is also assisted from becoming distorted or displaced during the performance of its supporting function by the incasing housing or shell. By taking advantage of both of these strengthening and bracing means, the'tank supporting ramework may be made less expensive than usual and the ordinary diagonal or cor'- ner braces may be omitted.
Various other featuresl of benefit, utility, and superiority will become apparent to those skilled in this art from a consideration of a preferred embodiment of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawing and described in detail below,

' The appliance includes a tank-supporting skeleton-frame comprising four, corner, upright angle-bars or posts 10, 11, 12, and 13,
the lower ends of which are fastenedv to` gether by two longitudinal angle-bars 14 and 15 and a pair of 'lat end-bars or strips 16 and 17. This bottom of the frame is equipped with a sheet-metal pau 18 restlng on the inturned flanges of the two Opposite angle-bars 14: and 15, the rim or wall of the pan being riveted, if desired, tothe upstanding portions of the four bars constituting such bottom. The top of the frame is composed of two longitudinal angle-bars 19 and 2O riveted to the corner-posts, each of such bars having a top, horizontal, inturned flange, as is clearly illustrated in Fig. 2, The top of this frame also. comprises two flat end bars 21 and22,`thus giving to the frame a rectangular top Opening adapted to receive a portion of the"v cylindrical water supplytank. This supporting-'frame vis not provided with anyl diagonal or' corner' braces, and by reason of the other features lof the structure ofthe appliance as a whole, the frame may be made weaker as to its structural elements and the employment of the fastening rivets, than would'otherwise be possible. As is clearly shown, the connections of the various bars one with anotherat the` corners 'of `theframe are made vwith singlej rivets only, whereby ythe 'frame of itself is not necessarily eec'tively prevented from possibly becoming distortediout of shape, double riveting or bracing of `some kind ordinarily being required to-adequately stiil'en such a frame against distortion.
The sheet-metal-cylindrical water-reservoir or supply tank 23 is provided'with inwardly-disposed stiii'ening corrugations or ribs 24, 24, andatits-Opposite ends vit has outstanding, circular, marginal, seam rims or flanges 25, 2,5.- This tank or barrel is disposed horizontally and fits partially in the top of the frame, being supported by the bars 19 and 20 and it completely fills the rectangular opening of the frame, preventing the skewing or twisting of the frame out of shape. Stated Otherwise, the tank, although supported by the frame, performs its function of maintainingthe latter in proper form and vshape to preserve the maXi" mum strength relations of its component parts or elements." l
In order to prevent the tankfro'rn becoming displaced with relation to the frame during transportation, and `to still "further stiien and brace the duplex structure as a whole, I provide at each corner of the-frame a metal strap 26 riveted at its lower end to the frame and at its upper end to the corresponding marginal seam 11111925 of the tank or waterwntainerwf The appliance also comprises a sheetmetal shell or casing 30 fitted over the tank and frame'andl' having afsubstanti allysemi-cylindrical upper part3l over andspaced away from the corresponding portion of the tank to provide an air jacket or insulation between the two. In a watering-appliance of the character described, the combination of a substantially-unbraced skeleton-frame having a top with a rectangular opening bordered by bars of said frame, a horizontally-disposed cylindrical Water supply-tank having its lower portion snugly tted in said open top and supported by at least some of the frame bars bordering said top opening, said tank preventing said frame-top from becoming distorted out of rectangular shape, said tank also at each end having an extended circular riin, means to fasten said rims to said frame, a trough, means to conduct the water of said tank to said trough, and a casing` housing said tank, frame, and trough, and closely ittingover said frame preventing distortion or twisting thereof, substantially as described.

In a watering-appliance of'the character described, the combination of a skeleton-frame, a cylindrical water-supply-tank supported in horizontal relation on said frame, means fastening said tank to said frame, a trough, means to deliver the Water ol? said tank to said trough, a sheet-metal housing incasing said tank, frame, and trough, said housing having a substantiallysemi-cylindrical upper portion fitting over the corresponding part of said tank and a siibstantially-rectangular lower portion fitting over the lower part of the tank and the supporting-frame, substantially as de scribed.
