To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that We,-ERNEST M. FREoK and FRANK V. ROBERTS, citizens of the United States, residing at Asheville, in the county of Buncombe and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wickfileaning Attachments for Liquid- Fuel Burners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wick cleaning appliances forliquid fuel burners and has as its primary object to provide a wick which will permit of the wicks of a blue flame oil stove or liquid fuel burners of other types being readily cleaned without the necessity of removingjany of the burner parts and wiping ofl'the edge of the wick as is at present necessary and which operation not only requires time but also re,- sults .in soiling of ones hands. Whilethe device embodying the present inventionis designed more particularly as an attachment for the burners of blue flame oil stoves Which are now in use and is adapted for ap plication topractically any of'the ordinary types of such burners, it will be understood, of course, tion may find embodiment directly in the initial construction of'suchburners.
The present invention also hasasits object to provide a device for the purpose stated the presence of'which in the burner structure will not in any way interfere with removal of the flame spreaderor any other of the detachable parts of the burner, the cleaning member of the device being in fact removable with the" flame spreader whereby to perniit of ready cleaning of these'parts.
Another object of the invention is to so -l0- cate the actuatingmember for the device that the same may be conveniently manipulated without likelihood of soiling or burning ones fingers. Fig. 8 is a similar view taken substantially on the line 8'8 of Fig. 3. In the drawings the numeral 1 indicates a liquid fuel supply pipe, which pipe leads from the usual reservoir 2 and supports the burner. The burner is shown in detail in Fig. 2 of the drawings, and the same comprises the usual wick tube 3 having the inner and outer walls indicated respectively by the numerals 4 and 5. The wick .isindicated by the numeral 6 and is supported by the usual carrier 7 for vertical adjustment within the wick tube. Securedto theinner wall of the wick tube 4 is a bracket 8 whichextends below the lower end ofthe saidtube and has a portion 9 extending laterally and side of the liquid fuel supply pipe. 1, the
lower end of the portion 8 of the said bracket member being-designed to engage-the upper side of the said pipe .both as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 8 of the drawing As is usual, the liquid fuel supply pipe 1. is provided with an outletin its upper side indicated by the numeral 11 and the wick tube 3 is provided at a point diametrically opposite the bracketmember 8-with anipple 12 having a passageway 13 communicating with the outlet 11 from the liquid fuel supply pipe. The nipple 12 has a down-turned end or branch 14: which isdesigned to seat in a liquid tight manner against a suitable boss 15 formed upon-the upper side of the pipe 1 and surrounding the outlet 11, and the saidnipple is clamped to-the pipe in a manner which will now'be explained. A yoke 16 com-prising spaced side members 17 and aconne'ctingmember- 18, is disposed to straddle the nipple l2 and the said pipe 1 and the lower endsofa the-side nembers 17 with a hookv portions. 19 with which-is engaged a link 20 designed to prevent spreading of these ends. -A clamping screw 21- is fitted through an opening22 formed in the connecting member 18 of the yoke 16 andis a d-justably threaded through a nut 23 whichlis confined bet-ween the side members 17 of the said yoke and, therefore, held against turning movement, thelower end of the screw 21 seatingin a suitable depression :24 formed in thetupperesideofthe nipple 12. Of course, by tighteningthe screw 21, the branch ltofthe nipple will, be firmly bound to the boss 15 so as to form a liquid-tight connection betweeir theseparts.
As is usual, the flame spreader, indicatedby thenumeral 125; is fixedly mounted in the upper 'end of the draft -t1ibe of the burner indicated by the numeral 26,the said draft tube beinfg provided at 5 its upper end with vertically extended spaced -po1'tions"27 having tongues 28.fitted through open'ing'sin the spreader 25 and' bent down to secure the spreader-fin place. 2. In a device of the class described, the
combination with a liquid fuel burner and a fuel supply pipe therefor, the burner having a wick tube, of a wick cleaning member including a head rotatably mounted at the upper end of the tube and having a. wick rubbing surface positioned above the upper end of the tube, a rotatable member mounted upon the fuel supply pipe, a stem extending downwardly from the cleaner head and having detachable engagement with the said rotatable member, means whereby the member may be rotated, and a lever member extending from the rotatable member to a point exteriorly of the base portion of the burner.

In a device of the class described, the combination with a liquid fuel burner having a wick tube, of a wick cleaning member rotatably mounted at the upper end of the tube and having a wick rubbing surface, a member rotatably mounted and having a copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the "Commissioner of intents I polygonal socket, a stem extending downwardly from the cleaning member axially thereof and provided with a polygonal lower 7 end removably fitting in the socket, and 'a finger piece extending from the rotatable member. v

In a device of the class described, the combination with a liquid fuel burner having a wick tube and a flame spreader, of a wick cleaning vmember rotatably mounted beneath the flame spreader and having a wick rubbing surface, a member rotatably mounted within the lower end of the wick tube and provided with a polygonal socket, a stem connected with the wick cleaning member and extending downwardly axially therefrom and having a polygonal lower end fitting removably in the socket, and a finger piece extending from the last mentioned member.
