Application filed. September 8, 1917. Serial No. 190,368.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, JOHN P. FINDLEY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Knoxville, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy Vehicles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates signed primarily for childrens use, and has for its object to provide a vehicle. of such class, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, which is simple in its construction, strong, durable, conveniently propelled by the child, readily set up and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture. 7
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specificallyv de-h scribed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claim hereunto appended.

Referring to the drawings in detail where- 'in like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views 1, denotes the vehicle body, having a narrow forward portion 2, and a wide rear portion 3, which constitutes a seat. The rear edge of the rear portion 3, has secured thereagainst a transversely extending vertically disposed back member 4, projecting above the body portion 1.
Secured against each side edge of the rear portion 3, is a vertically disposed side member 5, which abuts against and is flush with the top edge of the back member 1, as well as depending below the body portion 1.
Journaled in the lower portion of the side members 5, is a transversely extending rotatable axle 6, having a pair of oppositely disposed cranks 7 The axle 6, projects outwardly from each side member 5, and the projecting ends of said axle 6, are threaded as at 8.

The outer side of each wheel 10, centrally thereof, has secured therewith, by the hold fast devices 1 1, an apertured metallic disk 12, the opening 13, of the latter, which is polygonal in contour, "opposes the opening 14, formed in the wheel 10, for the passage of the axle 6.
Mounted on the I threaded ends of the axle 6, are polygonal-shape nuts 15, which extend into the openings 13, and couple the wheels 10, to the axle 6, whereby when the latter isrotated ried therewith. correspond in contour The shape of the nuts 15, to the shape of the openings 13.
The propelling mechanism for the vehicle, which is operated by the child, consists of a pair of. actuating levers 16, extending down through a pair of slots 17 formed in the narrow portion 2, intermediate the ends thereof. A bolt extends through and transversely of the narrow portion 2, for pivotally supporting the levers 16. The bolt is indicated at 18, projects across the slots 17 The upper end of each of the levers 16, is provided with a end of each of the levers 16, is pivotally connected the forward end of an elongated tortionally twisted link 20, which has its rear end loosely attached to a crank 7 The levers 16 are oppositely disposed with respect to each other, and when operated alternately move in opposite directions, under such conditions reciprocate the links 20, rotate the axle 6, and cause the propulsion of the vehicle.
The lower end of each of the levers 16, is bifurcated, as at 21, and into the bifurcation extends the forward end of a link 20. The pivot for the forward end of each link is indicated at 22, and the loose connections between the rear end of a link and a crank 7, is indicated at 23.
Arranged at the forward end of the body portion is an inverted harp or yoke 24: which has a shank 25, extending up through an opening 26, formed in the forward terminus of the narrow portion 2. The shank 25, is provided with a head 27, on its upper end whereby the shank is connected to the body portion 1 The diameter of the the wheels 10, will be carhandle 19, and to the lower 1 opening 26, with respect to the shank 25, is such, that the shank 25, can turn in said opening When occasion so requires. Interposed between the head 27 and body portion 1, is a Washer 28, and interposed between the harp 24, and body portion 1, is aWasher 29. The'washers 28 and 29 are mounted on the shank 25.
J ournaled inthe lower portion of the arms of the harp 24, is a front axle 30, which projects outwardly from each of the arms of the harp 24, and constitutes foot rests to enable the steering of the vehicle by the feet of the child. Fixed to the axle 30, and arranged between the arms of the yoke 24, is a front Wheel 31. Washers 32, are mounted on the axle 30, between" the Wheel 31', and the arms of the harp 24.

A childs vehicle comprising a body portion formed of a narrow forward-and a Wide rear portion, the former having a pair of oblong slots, one projecting forwardly of the other a pairi of side members secured to said rear portion and projecting'ab'ove and depending below the same, a back memin the presence of ber secured against said rear portion and the upper parts of said side members, a pair of oppositely disposed levers extending through said slots and having bifurcated lower ends, a common pivot extending transversely of said body portion for said levers, a headed shank depending through said forward portion'and terminating in an inverted harp, an axle extending from and projecting through each side of the harp, a steering'wheel carried by said axle and arranged Within the harp, a rotatable rear axle mounted in the depending part of said side members and provided with a pair of cranks, torsionally twisted links having their rear ends loosely connected with said cranks, and their forward ends extending into and connected with said bifurcated ends, and rear Wheels carried by the rear axle exte riorly of the side members.
