SAMUEL WEBSTER, 0F CLAYTON, MISSOURI.
WOOD-CUTTER.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be itknown that I, SAMUEL WEBSTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clayton, in the county of Saint Louis and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wood-Cutters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in wood cutting devices.
' The invention is primarily directed to a means for cutting cord wood into stove size blocks and includes a buck or support for a log having a detachable saw associated therewith which is adjustable so that the wood can be out thereby without the removal thereof from the buck or support, the device being of a foldable nature, easily collapsed into a small package when not required for use.
A further object of the invention is to pro duce a device of this character which will expedite the cutting of'wood into logs and render the same less laborious than by the usual manner employed. 25
Other objects and advantages will appear as the nature of theinvention is better understood, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is perspective view of the improvement.
' Fig. 2 is a sectional view approximately on the line 2--2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a view showing the device folded.
The buck or log support includes end men1- hers arranged in pairs each of an equal length and width. Each pair of members comprising the ends lap one over the other and are pivotally connected as at The legs 66 are connected, adj acent their lowe 1 ends by transverse strips 7 and arelihewise connected below their pivots 5 by similar strips 8. In addition to these strips the outer leg members have secured upon their center thereof are the lower ends of arms outer edges, below the strips 8, a strip or plate 9, and this plate, upon its upper edge is provided with two spaced notches 19 re spectively. To the inner edge of the inner leg member 6, opposite the plate 9 is secured a plate 11 which is wider than the plate 9' and which is provided with openings 12 r spectively disposed opposite the I'BSPBGHYQ notches 10 in the plate 9. The openings in the plate 12 are raised a consider-able distance below the notches- 10 in the plate 9.
Secured to the respective strips 9, at the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 10, 1918.
Serial No. 240,014. I
13, the said arms being connected by a pivot 11, and this pivot is arranged in a line with the pivots 5 which connect thelegs 6. The log 15 iwlien supported by the buck maybe cut at a point between the arms 13 and the-opposite sides of the buck provided by the leg members (i, so that two cuts can be made on the log when the same is resting on the buck.
The log, sawing device includes a bar 16 having its outer edge pointed as at 17 and its lower edge notched as at 18. To the outer edge of the bar, or to the edge thereof opposite that provided with the point.l7 is secured straps 19, one upon each side of the bar, and between these straps, outward of the bar is pivotally connected, as at 20 a lever 21. The lever may be provided with spaced transverse openings 22 any of which receiving a device 23 to whichis connected the inner end of a saw blade 24. The bar 16 is designed to have its pointed end 17 arranged in one of the openings 12 in the plate 11 and its notch received in the notch 10 in the plate 9 opposite the said opening 12. The
and with only a minimum amount of physical exertion. When the log is severed the cutting device is removed from the buck and the pointed end 17 of the bar 16 is arranged in the second opening 12 of the plate 11, the notch of the bar engaging in the second notch 10 01"- the plate 9. The saw blade is, of course, again swung over the log and the lever operated as above described.
The lever being pivoted to the strap 19 which is in turn pivoted to the bar 16,.and the saw blade being pivoted to the lever permit of these elements being folded into a small package when not'required for use,
so I .saw blade 24; is swung over the log 15, and
and the pivoted connection between the elc- It istobe understood that the pointedend 17 of-the bar lfifrequently engages with the opposite walls of. the openings 12 in the plate 11, when the device is in use. v
From the foregoing it is believed the m provement will be fully understood without further description.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
In a. log cutting device, as herein described, the combination with a buck comprising pivoted legs and pivoted arms between the upper portions of said legs, plates secured to the legs below the pivots therefor,
10 one of said plates being notched and the nee-wee other plate being provided with openings, a notched bar adapted to have one end received in one of the openings and its notch received in one of the notches of the respective plates, straps on the outer end of the bar, a lever pivoted between said straps, and a pivoted saw adjustably connected to said lever; I
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
' SAMUEL, WEB STER.
