paekihiisurrounding the several reoaptaeles [end .of the bore the body of the shell;
' I have illustrated is particularlyuse'ful liqvfids y nition dumps or 'inumtmn magazines or 2B and preventing them being broken through accidental jar. Extending centrally through the mass of gun cotton 29 and centrall with relation to the several receptacles ..8 is a tube 30 which may be made of any suitable material and may contain gun powder or other explosive. This tube at its upper end rests upon a plate 31 in turn resting upon flanges 32 and the upper end -of the tube is provided with a printer or detoiiat'ing cap 33, .while the lower end of the tube is closed by a plug of wadding 34. The tlctonating cap 33 is disposed immediately beneath the small firip pin 24 and this in turn is disposed imme lately behind the firing pin 19.
it will thus be obvious that when the point of the shell strikes the objective, the firing pin will be forced inward against the small firing pin 24 and this will be forced inwardagainst the detonating cap exploding the gun powder or other explosive in the tube 80. This explosion will cause the ex plosion of the high explosive 27 and also of the gun cotton. The relatively thin walls of the body 14 will be blown apart the frangible receptacles 28 will be broken and the inflammable liquid carried therein \\'il be set on fire and thrown in all directions. The case or body will separate from the head upon this explosion while the head is force into the objective and the i rections. he shell casing is preferably provided with a plurality of circumferentially extending hands 35, these bands being rifled and acting to reduce friction when the shell is within the gun.
For the purpose of preventing accidental. detonation of the shell when it is being handled or transported, I provide a protector. This comprises a, plate 36 formed to 87 for the oint of the shell and having a. plurality of ongitudinally extending members 38 which attheir extremities rest upon the, shell band 35 which is adjacent the junction between the head and Means maybe provided for detachably on aging these me'm beta 38 with the body 0 the shell-or with the shell band. This device prevents it solutely' any accidental projection of the firing pin against the detonatingeap so that the Shell may be dafely handled, without anv chance of explosion.
An incendiary shell of the character which or bombarding tanks containing inflammable gases or fpr bombarding ammutories- It may be also used ver effectively for bombarding trenches as re is more feared than any other destructive agent.
It will be obvious, of course, that this shell shell case is born into fragments which will be cast in all 1- thick sleeve, a
anemia ma be of any desired size to fit any desired caliber of gun and that it may be made very cheaply.
Having described my invention what I claim is:
l. A shell of the character prising a conoidal hollow relatively thick head, a hollow bodv of relatively thin material having screw-threaded engagement with the head, wedding disposed within the body and separating it into two compartments, a plate mounted within the body and extending across the butt end of the head, a tube containing explosive material carried by said plate and extending through the wedding. a primer mounted upon the forward end of the tube, explosive material carried in the rear compartment, a plurali y of frangible receptacles disposed in .the forward compartment and separated from each other by a packing of hi hly explosive mate'rial, a plug detachably engaged with the rear end of the head and having a firing pin coactinz with the primer. and a firing pin mounted in the head and extending to the point thereof coacting with the fi named firing pin. and a spring urging sai last named firing pin outward away from the first named firing pin.
2. shell of the. character described comprising a'relativelv thick head and a. hollow relatively thin tubular bodv. the rear end of the bodv being rovided with a relatively thick sleeve. a plug of the sleeve. wedding forming a partition separating the bodv of the shell into two com artments. a tube containing explosive material extending through the center of the forwardmost compartment and into the rear most compartment and through said wadding. and provided with a primer at its forward end. fra ible receptacles containing inflammable need w thin the described con'r fluids and disn dorw'ard com artment concentricallv to the tube. a parking of explosive material isnosed within the bodv'and separating the frangible receptacles from each other and from the bodv. and means carried in the head of the shell for detonating the explosive material in the'tube.
3. A shell of the character described pomprising a relativelv thick head and a hollow relatively thin tubular bod of the body being provided with amelatively plug fitting in the rear: end of the sleeve, wedding-forming a artition separating the body of the shell Into. two compartments. a tube containing explosive tnaterialcxtending through the center of the forwardmost compartment and into the rearmost compartment and thrmigh said wadd-ing. and provided with ap'rhner at its for: ward end, flfingible receptacles containing inflammable fitting in the raar end' y. the rear end hide and disposed within the forward cmu mrhncut cuncontrivally t0 the tube, a pzwkmg of q-xplusivv nmtcx'ia] disposed within the Imdy and separating the fl'zmgihh: l'vcvpfaclns from vuch utllor and from the body. nu-zms carried in thv huaul of the shell for dotunuting the explosive mulq'ial in Hm tubv. and a llutac'hubiu pl'w [0("01 npurutiwly MIPPUI'UL] upon the body and having nu-mlwr vxtcmling arrrnss the :lpvx of the shvll in spaced relation t-hr-rulo il' and preventing the accidental (Intonation 0f the shell.
In testimony whereof I herounlo am; my Signature in the nrvscnce 0f twu witness-0s.
