The flange 22 is providedwith a grooved part 24 which is continuous, and said groove of each head is adapted to receivea tongue or rib 25 located at one of the ends of the staves or members 11, the said staves or members, when they are put together, forming substantially a continuous annular rib around the head. A wire or other element 26 is located in the groove formed by the ribs 25 of the staves, and this wire, when tightened, will serve to rigidly hold the ends of the barrel staves to the head cooperating therewith. The flange 30 may be angular for a part of its length and, with the flange 28, forms an annular chamber or recess to receive the flange 22 and ends of the barrel staves. The flange 28 covers and protects the tie wire 26 from injury or rupture during handling of the barrel. The band may be divided and has an offset part 32 terminating in a short skirt portion 33 which extends lengthwise of the staves or members for a short distance. A wire or band 34 is located under the shoulder of the band or member 28 so that when its ends are joined by twisting or otherwise, the band or member 28 may be compressed to further hold the staves or members and heads together, and in. such way that the band will materially assist in strengthening the ends of the barrel.
The barrel or container body may be bound intermediate the ends thereof, and for this purpose various means may be employed. As shown, each stave or member is provided with a transverse groove 35 which when the staves are put together, form substantially annular grooves around the barrel or container body. A wire band 36 is portion 21 concaved located in each of the grooves, so that when the two bands are joined by twisting the ends or otherwise, the body will be bound intermediate the ends and thereby materially strengthened.
From the foregoing it will be seen that simple and efficient means has been provided for rigidly binding the staves or body members of the barrel to the head; that means has been provided for protecting the ends of'the staves from being crushed or bent; and that simple means has been provided for locking the staves and heads together to prevent relative vertical movement thereof. It will also be seen that the wire which 30 locks the staves and head together to prevent relative vertical movement between the) staves and head, is completely inclosed within and protected by the split channel member. Accidental rupture of the wire during handling of the barrel is thus effectually prevented.
What I claim is: p 1. A barrel or other container comprising a plurality of members, a head having an outwardly extending flange provided with an annular groove, said members being provided with transversely extending ribbed portions adapted to enter the groove of the flange of the head, a wire band located in the groove of the members and adapted tohold the members to the flange of the head, and means located about the ends of the members and the flange of the head for holding the several parts together, said means comprisng a split band provided with substantially vertical side Walls, said walls being adapted to abut and bear against said head flange and ends of said members throughout their length.
