CONTINUOUS-ACTING PUMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 23, 1915. Serial No. y9,9111.
To all whom t may concer/n.'
Be it known that I, LAURrrs Dnsnsniv, a citizen of the United Sta-tes, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Continuous-Acting Pumps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such vas will enable others skilled in the art to which it 'appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in continuous acting pumps, especially adapted for use a vacuum orsuction pump to produce a partial vacuum or suction in a milking apparatus, or similar apparatus.
To the above end, generally stated, the invention consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and dened in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the. invention', like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the improved pump, some parts being broken away, and some of the exposed parts being shown in section; and, 4
Fig. 2 is a view principally in longitudinal -vertical section, taken on the line )I2- X2 of Fig. 1.
The numeral 1 indicates a pair of diametrically disposed cylinders, supported on end castings 2 and connected by a cylindrical crank lcasing 3, with its axis extended at right angles to the axis of said cylinders.
Formed in the top of the crank casing 3 is' an exhaust port 4, open to the atmosphere and having mounted therein a muiiier 5. This muilier, as shown, is in the form of a plurality of vertically spaced Wooden blocks, each having formed therein a plurality of circumferentially spaced openings 6, that are odset with respect to the openings in adjacent blocks. y
,The open outer ends of the cylinders 1 are closed by heads 7, each having formed therein a valve chamber' 8 witha spider bearing bracket 9. In cach bearing bracket 9 is mounted' the stern lof a spring closed valve 10, arranged to open under the suction stroke of the piston. These valves 10 are seated in seats 11 formed in the inner faces of the heads', and normally closing the valve chambers 8 with respect to the cylinders l. Each valve chamber ois connected.
to the suction pipe, or conduit 12, ci a milkthe interior of the piston 1i, and the laten ally spaced webs 15 and slots 16 afford con stant communication between the interior of the piston 14 and the crank casing 3. Elie conduits 17 are normally closed by spring closed `valves 19, seated in seats 20, formed in the inner ends of said conduits, and hatvw ing their stems mounted in the bearing brackets 20.
Journaled in bearings 21, formed in the crank casing 3, is a horizontally extended shaft 22, which is extended axially through said crank casing, and through the slots 1S formed in the webs oi" the piston 14. To one end of the shaft 22 is keyed a driving pulley 23, over which runs a belt (not shown), and to the intermediate portion of said shaft .is keyed an eccentric 2t, which Works between the Webs 15 and the piston 14. Rigidly secured to the vpiston 14 is a pair of horizontally spaced, vertical cross-head guides 25; located, one atfthe junctionioiG each head of the piston 14 with the webs 15. These cross-head guides 25 extend transversely through the piston la, and have tion of the eccentric 24, a reciprocating inotion is imparted to the piston 14C, and a vertical sliding movement is imparted to the cross-head 26 on the guides 25.
lil@
Under the oscillatory movement oi' thepiston 14, the valves 10 are alternately opened under. the suction stroke, thereby producing a partial vacuum or suction in the conduit 12. Under the compression stroke of the piston 14, the valves 19 are alternately opened to releasev the compressed air in the cylinders l, and discharge the same through the exhaust port 4.
As is evident by reversing lthe valves 10 i and 19, sothat the valves 10 Will open under the compression stroke of the piston, and the valves 9 open under the suction stroke thereof, the improved pump may be used in connection with a compressor.
What I claim isz' 1. The combination with a pair of 'opposite cylinders, and a. casing connecting the same, of a cylindrical piston having, on its ends, piston heads orking in the cylinders, said piston also having formed therein a horizontally alined pair of longitudinal slots and a vertically alined pair of longitudinal slots, a driving shaft journaled in the casing and extending through the horizontally alined slots, a pair of laterally spaced guide rods extending transversely through the piston at the ends of the vertically alined slots, an eccentric strap carried by the guide rods and Working in the vertically alined slots, and an eccentric mounted in'the eccentric strap and secured to the driving shaft.
2. The combination with a pair of opposite cylinders, and va casing Connecting the same, of a cylindrical piston having, on its ends, piston heads workingin the cylinders, said piston also having formed therein a horizontally alined pair of longitudinal slots and a vertically alined pair of longitudinal slots, a driving shaft journaled in the casing and extending through alined slots, vertically alined pairsof segmental seats formed in the piston and opening into the ends of the -vertically alined slots, a pair of guide rods extending transversely through the piston and having their ends anchored in said seats, an eccentric strap carried by the guide rods and working in the vertically alined slots, and an eccentricmounted in the eccentric strap and secured to the driving shaft.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
