MECHANICAL TOY.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ELBERT W. BARTON, a. citizen of the United States, residing at Binghamton, in the county of Broome and State of New York, have invented certam new and useful Improvements in Mechanical Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention hasrelati'on to mechanical toys, and has for an object to provide a toy having a peculiar mechanical movement which will prove of interest to an operator, and which will instruct the young in the principles of mechanics.
Another object of the invention is to provide a mechanical movement which by giving a slight initial impetus, will run for some time Without additional impetus, and will be of interest and amusement owing to the peculiar movements of some of the parts of the toy.
In addition to the foregoing, this invention comprehends improvements'in the details of construction and arrangement of parts, to be hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, in which similar and corresponding parts are designated by the same characters of reference throughout the several views in which they appear:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a mechanical toy constructed in accordance with my invention.

l/Vith reference to the drawings, 1 designates the base, and 2 the vertical supports bolted to the base and provided with a cross head 3 at the upper end thereof, said cross head being connected to the uprights by means of bolts 4. Crossed braces 5 extend from one of the uprights to the other and are secured thereto by bolts.
Mounted in suitable bearing brackets 6 supported upon the base 1 is a shaft 7 provided with a belt pulley 8 and a fly wheel 9. Near the opposite ends of the shaft 7 and properly keyed to said shaft are tapped wheels 10 provided with a series of radial spokes 11, each having a resilient ball 12 secured to the end thereof. As shown, there are four of these spokes, each provided with Specification of Letters Patent.

Depending from the cross head?) are the bearing brackets 13 secured underneath said cross head by means of suitable bolts 14. Mounted in said brackets is a shaft 15. Keyed to said shaft is a belt pulleyl6 and a belt 17 extends around said pulley l6 and around the belt pulley 8 on said shaft 7. The shaft 15 extends beyond the frame of the toy and near the outer ends of the said shaft are keyed the power wheels 18. Upon the opposite sides of each of the wheels 18 is understood that aclutoh comprising a plate 19 having an enlarged portion 20, said plate bein connected to a bearing block by means of bolts 22. The blocks 21 are provided with inclined inner surfaces 23, while their outer edges 24 bear slightly against the sides of the rim of the wheel 18. In the inclined or cut away portion 23 of the blocks 21 are mounted springs 25 secured to vthe plates 19, while at the outer ends of the springs 25 rollers 26 are mounted. Secured between the plates 19 at opposite sides of each wheel is a tappet arm 27 said arm being connected to the plates 19 by suitable bolts 28. The lower ends of the tappet arms 27 are in the path of the tappet balls 12. It is to be noted that the tappet arms 27 are disposed upon opposite sides of the wheels 18, so that when one is exerting its weight to rotate the wheel in the direction of the arrow shown in Fig. 1, the other tappet arm has been struck by one of the tappet balls and is passed upward. Secured to the shaft 7 is a crank 29. this crank mav be used or not as desired.
In operation, the fly wheel9 is given a slight rotative impetus and rotation of the shaft '7 is transmitted through the pulleys 8 and 16 and belt 17 to the shaft 15. One or the other of the tappet arms 27 will be engaged by one of the balls 12 of a corresponding tappet wheel 10 the effect of which is to throw the arm upward, the arms being alternately struck by the tappet balls. At each upward movement of either of the arms 27 the clutches carried by the arms will operate to engage the wheels 18 so as to carry said wheels around for a partial revolution. The motion of, said wheels 18 will be then transmitted through the belt 17 and pulleys 8 and 16 to the shaft 7, rotating the same. The machine in operation will then have the space formed by the i appearance ofoperating without the application of external power. Motion of the machine will however cease when the inertia of the moving parts is overcome. Operation of the machine may be continued indefinitely by rotating the crank 29.

A mechanical toy comprising a drive shaft having a series of tappetarms connected thereto and rotatable therewith, a driven shaft provided with a pair of wheels keyed thereto, tappet arms connected to said driven shaftand extended beyond the peripheries of said wheels, said shafts being connected by a driving belt, a crank to rotate said drive shaft, and to operate the tappet wheels to strike said tappet arms, and clutches for said tappet arms, said clutches adapted to engage the rims of the wheels on the driven shaft during the downward movement of said tappet arms. A mechanical toy comprising. a frame, a drive shaft, tappet wheels on said drive shaft, resilient tappet balls at the ends of the spokes of said tappet wheels, a driven shaft, a belt connecting said driven shaft with said drive shaft, power wheels on said driven shaft, tappet arms connected to said shaft and extending beyond the peripheries of said wheels into the path of said tappet wheels, clutches to engage said wheels during the downward movement of said tappet arms, and means for rotating the drive shaft.
3. A mechanical toy comprising a frame, a drive shaft, a driven shaft, connections between said shafts, tappet wheels on the drive shaft, tappet arms carried by the driven shaft, drive wheels, clutches to engage said wheels during the downward movement of the tappet arms, and means for rotating the drive shaft.
4:. In a mechanical toy, the combination of a drive shaft, tappet wheels at the opposite ends of said drive shaft, said wheels comprising spokes having resilient tappet balls at the ends thereof, a driven shaft, connec tions between said driven shaft and drive shaft, wheels on said driven shaft, tappet arms connected to said shaft and provided with oppositely disposed clutch members to engage the sides of the wheels during the downward movement of each of the tappet arms, and means for giving an initial impetus to the drive shaft.
5. A mechanical toy comprising a drive shaft, a driven shaft, pulleys on said shafts, a belt on said pulleys connecting said shafts, oppositely positioned tappet arms connected to said driven shaft, clutches connected to said arms, each clutch comprising a plate. bearing blocks secured to said plate, and means to rotate said drive shaft.
